Help, duck hatched early

Hi all,

Yesterday one of our ducks hatched early. Yolk still attached. I read every post I could find on here. Propped up in a cup with a damp cloth in the bator. Today the sac looks to be mostly absorbed. Her eyes opened for the first time and she peeps often. However she is still very tired and looking like a newborn. I am hoping she perks up soon.

For those of you with lots of experience, how long do "premiees" usually rest (for lack of a better word)?

I am not sure (not a hatcher) but from what I have read here, even full term ducklings are exhausted after they get out of the shell and need to rest a day, if I recall correctly.

Glad the yolk is absorbing.

Give it some more time, just don't rush it... when it's ready it will start moving on it's own... might give it a drop of poly visol w/out iron to help give it a boost... just make sure it doesn't breath it in, and give a couple drops of water after to get the taste out...

You've done well, btw... biggest thing is to be patient... I had a little grey call that took 3 days to absorb it's yolk after pipping... it's now a happy, healthy little troublemaker, lol...

You're very welcome! I don't have tons of experience, but have had success with less is best, lol... is it fully out of the shell in the cup, or still in shell?

Small amount of shell on bottom, there were still a few blood vessels on that part so I left it.

Very good job! If you have some vaseline, coconut oil or last resort some Neosporin w/out pain reliever use a qtip to lube up that area so it dosen't glue to the duck... if it's dry already, moisten it with water first and let it soak in, then lube it...

Her sister hatched on Tuesday and was totally fine. I had to go get a baby chicken to keep her company, she is getting quite spoiled!
