help I don’t know what to do. It’s been 39 hours since the external pip. I haven’t seen any progress. I can see tiny hole. I don’t hear anything. I read you’re not supposed to open the incubator at this time but I’m worried can I open and candle the egg to see if it’s moving? If it is what do I do? Do I help it? Please help - first timer here. My 4 yr old daughter found this egg on a walking path near our house, we had no idea it would come this far but now we’re invested and she’s already calling herself a duckie mom 🤣

Did the pip happen at the air cell end of the pointy end ?
Usually after external pip you should see another hit 8-12 hours later
I would definitely check the baby out
Can you move the bator to a bathroom
Turn on the shower on hot and leave it for a few mins
This will heat up the room and get the humidity higher so you can check the egg out
If not that’s ok take the egg out and candle
If it’s the air cell end you can make the hole bigger by moving shell but use coconut oil to wet the membrane to check for veins
If no veins visible you can make the zip around and cut the membrane
Don’t rip or pull it as it’s more risky
I use Q tips to moisten the membrane and my finger to remove shell
I found tweezers would get the membrane

Yes it at the air cell end. I think there was a second “hit” because the egg rolled across the incubator lol but now nothing. Okay I think I will take it out and check!! I can move to the bathroom - this so so stressful! If there is still veins do I just put the egg back and wait longer?

If you see veins on the membrane at the pip, yes wait longer. If you see yawning or chewing motions from its beak, also wait longer

If there are still veins or the duckling is opening and closing its mouth (absorbing the yolk). Then leave the egg longer to hatch on its own. In this case your temperature might of been a little low. If no veins and the yolk is absorbed begin an assisted hatch, but take it slow allowing the duckling to do as much as possible on its own. Any idea what type of duck? If it is Muskovy they require 35+ days instead of 28.

Yes if you see veins then stop and let baby continue to absorb

I pulled the shell away. There’s no movement at all. I tried to touch its bill and no reaction. I peeled back a little more the membrane was still wet. But no movement. No blood when I pulled it back but there was like this liquid coming out of the shell it was brownish yellow (is that old blood?). The area around his bill was rock hard I had to really pull it back with some give. Is he dead? I put oil on his membrane and put him back in the incubator. Would he respond to me touching his beak?

I’m thinking baby had passed
Maybe got stuck
If you aren’t seeing blood you can peel more back
Usually they will respond
Breathing and chewing

We have no idea what kind of duck we found it on a path where there’s lots of different kinds of ducks. I peeled the egg away the membrane is still wet. But there’s no movement at all. Does that mean he’s dead?
