Help! Duckling bleeding!

Pics
Hi Opal, I think since the bill is completely out and it is able to breathe that it's probably just resting. I agree with everything @Miss Lydia has told you.

Now if you want to start picking away at the shell you can do it very carefully but make sure that no membrane is still attached to it. You will find that near the air cell is the best place to do it but from the picture, it looks like the part of the shell that is out may be the air cell? Hard to tell from that one picture.

@WVduckchick what do you think about this? It started zipping yesterday and then stopped.

I’m worried to pick some of the shell off. I did a few hours ago, and there are still blood vessels. I applied Vaseline to the dried membrane. I wish I would’ve taken a picture when she started zipping and stopped. It was sort of in a downwards diagonal

@Opal8 I saw this thread yesterday but didn't know how much you might have helped with the shell removal. I know it's so tempting to dig in and give them a hand but it usually ends up ok if you do. The danger is getting bleeding started which did happen but it doesn't seem like it was much to worry about at all. I've done that too and it's a panic situation but mostly it can be stopped which yours did.

I'm really thinking since you are looking at a bunch of veins it's not really ready and it just needs to rest and absorb the rest of the veins and yolk. I have no idea why it started zipping when it wasn't ready but sometimes these things happen.

When it's ready those veins you are seeing will be gone. Remain calm and just wait it out. Not much you can really do now but let the little one rest and absorb.
