help dying goat!!!!!!!!

Okay so I'm squirting water mixed with baking soda down him with a syringe. I called another vet and I am taking him to the other vet this afternoon. I am also going to pick up some probiotics while I am out. He still looks bad, so I hope the vet can help him.

Hey RobbyRoost what part of the country are you in? I have lots of goat friends and might be able to send you their way. The whole cows milk thing is not ideal but if you don’t have a source of goats milk I would mix some goat milk replacer with the whole cows milk about 20/80. Did the first Vet think it was constipated? It could be stones if it is a young wether , if so he will need help fast.

The backing soda is to help with gas that can lead to bloat. I don’t want to scare you, please keep us posted. Feel free to PM me for a phone#, I am by no means a goat guru but I have my own herd of about 40 (or slightly more Nigerians and Pygmy’s)and fortunate enough to know some very wise and good goat people.

What makes you think it's constipation? Lack of poop, or is he standing there kinda 'squeezing' and nothing appears to be happening? Have you seen him pee? Is he kicking at his belly or anything like that?

Is he eating grain/feed/pellets yet, and if so, what kind and how much?

I am in northeast Florida. The vet I just got back from seeing gave me a number for a person to buy fresh goats milk, we got some and I just got three ounces down him, which is good since he hasn't eaten any milk all day. Apparently it was not constipation, he said there is something wrong with his digestive system and he thinks he may not have gotten enough colostrum after birth so he has a weak immune system. He gave him another antibiotic shot and another vitamin shot. The vet emptied his stomach and then filled it with a mega-anacid. He said to keep him warm and to try to get as much of the goats milk down as possible, and to give him yogurt. He is not out of the woods yet but I hope he will come out soon.

Sounds like the vet may be leaning toward FKS...Floppy Kid Syndrome .

I doubt the kid has Floppy Kid...I think it was the cows milk. He needed goats milk or milk replacer that is either made for kids or is a universal replacer.

I hope the goats milk does the trick for you. I'm glad you took him to the vet I hope he pulls through for you. I'll hold good thoughts...good luck.

Wow I am glad to hear you got qualified help on deck... In inflamed Rhumen perhaps... Probably why the vet emptied him and filled him with antacid. I am glad to hear about you finding goats milk. Good luck with your baby.

I have raised kids (when I have a single and the cost isn't too bad) on whole cows milk, and many that raise goats prefer it to any replacer. The probiotocI use is probios, comes in a tube at any tsc, or farm supply store. It is a tough road if they don't get colostrum. Was he never on his mom at all?

I've raised 5 bottle babies on whole cows milk. The breeder said to NEVER use milk replacer. Since then, I have heard horror stories about using it.
