Hi there,
so my chicken laid an abnormally large egg and I suspected this chick would have troubles getting out. So on day 22 when all my chicks had hatched I finally pipped the egg myself (I could hear movement and peeping and could see the chick has broken into the air sack when I candled it) I pipped it so that it could breath. I even helped zip it a little because the egg is SO large. I zipped it enough to where the beak was now touching the shell to make it easier. It is now day 24 and my little chick still has not hatched and is peeping constantly. The membrane has dried because I had a few shrinkwrapped chicks I had to tend to (which are now totally fine and healthy!) This caused the last chick (the one I need help with) to become sticky. So sticky that it was concrete! I checked today because she looked practically lifeless and chipped away about half the shell completely to find a chick so gluey and stuck that my fingers are sticky. I need help. She is currently wrapped in a warm wash cloth in the bator. her membrane is an amber color and a tad bit gooey now that she been in the wet cloth but I want to get her out. I will post a picture if I get a response! I had my first chick ever die this morning and I can't lose another one today.

Can you try to free it enough so that it could move its legs, head and wings? I also had a shrink-wrapped chick that was very sticky. Fortunately, I was able to peel off enough of the membrane that it could move freely. There were still chunks of membrane on the head and back, but I left those there because if I tried to peel, I would have pulled off the soft down, too. After a week, the remaining pieces fell off on their own. That chick is now healthy, just a little smaller than the rest of the other chicks. Good luck with your chick.

One more thing. I read a post in which the lady said she washed the shrink-wrapped chick in warm water. The next day it died. I believe the chick got too cold from the bath. So, don't do that.
