HELP!!! EMERGENCY!!! WHERE IS THE EGG?

I like the warm soak idea, too. It worked for my tiny society finch.

An idea for keeping her separate from the others to treat with antibiotics:
A medium- to large-sized dog crate with a rabbit drip-bottle for antibiotic water. Put bedding on the bottom to keep her comfortable.

As a former nurse of humans, I wonder if chickens, like humans, need to be walking around to keep their systems "moving" and all their muscles (including, for chickens, egg-expulsion muscles), so I'm not sure this sort of enclosure is the best idea.

Another dosing idea without separation: take an insulin syringe (needle removed) with correctly calculated dosage inside and simply firmly introduce it into the corner of her beak and send it down her gullet.

I work for a vet that sees some birds, and I don't know if it will work at this point, or even on a chicken, but with parrots we put them in a warm, humid environment and they usually lay the egg...(i.e. bathroom all steamed up from a hot shower). Good luck!

Chris, this is from dlhunicorn's website and may help you. Hope you don't mind, Diana.

oviductl2.jpg

Oviduct: This is a long, tubelike organ lying along the
backbone and attached to it loosely between the ovary
and the tail. It is approximately 25 to 27 inches (63.5 to
68.6 cm) long, and may be divided into five areas which
perform certain functions in completing the formation of
the egg

Would seem the oviduct is upward and the intestines are downward.

When I feel her abdomen the egg feels like its ready just to fall out. It's as if I would squeeze a little it would come shooting out. I dont know. I may try the warm bath thing tonight just to see. She's still eating, drinking, and moving around fine and doesn't seem any different.

Although she's learned that when I reach into the coop I'm going to feel her. She starts squatting down before I even open the door.

If it's stuck up in there, she probably is uncomfortable and "cramped". If you have been trying to get it out of her, even though you have been unsuccessful so far, it may actually be giving her a little temporary relief from some discomfort.

Good egg-shooting-out-the-chicken's-butt vibes heading your way!

Do NOT force the egg out.

The repro tract of a hen is not a "straight tube". There are several curvatures that the egg could get caught in and again..be stuck. It may be that the egg is not properly rotated so that the large end is first...she may be attempting to remedy this.

Also, if you attempt to squeeze it out, you may injure the vaginal muscles and cause issues with further laying.

Well I aint sqeezing anything silly... At this point I've resolved to the fact that she'll lay it when she is ready. I've given her extra calcium and that doesn't seem to change anything. I'll try Calciboost this week, and a warm bath, but aside from that I'm out of options.
