I have a hen that has been holding an egg for well over a week now. I have been feeling her abdomen to see if it has moved, and lately it hasn't. For the past day or so it's been feeling overly large and/or swollen in that area.

This morning I felt her and felt (and heard) the egg crack. I put on some latex gloves and rubbed my finger with vaseline. I inserted my finger into her vent and proceeded with trying to remove the egg. However, I can't get to it. I can feel the top of it, but it feels as if it is covered with tissue. I can't actually feel the egg itself.

Where exactly is the egg, and how/where do I move my finger to get it out?

It could still be in the uterus.

If that's the case you won't be able to reach it and will have to hope it passes on it's own.

GREAT! The egg is at least cracked, I can't get to it, and this is my best Buff hen. Its going to a FUN day today!

I swear if she doesn't get better and I have to end up putting her down, I'm selling out.

Why don't you take her to an avian vet? I'm sure they could surgically remove it if necessary, or at least take x-rays to see where it is.

Because there is only one or two vets in the DFW area that will even treat a chicken, and as well, I can barely afford the healthcare for my dogs much less the chickens. Its sad, but its reality.

No, you're not. We won't let you. Think positively, everything is going to be fine.

Is she getting up to eat and drink and everything normally, or is she feeling sick and just sitting around?

She's been eating and drinking normally, last night she "shot" poop out across the pen, so I started getting worried about her. This mornig I went out to check and picked her up and felt her abdomen. The egg cracked a bit and now I'm really worried.

I would just watch her and hope it passes. I'd probably start her on some antibiotics too in case the cracking of the egg causes inflammation & infection. Good luck!

Are there any antibiotics that I can give her as an injection? I dont want to put Terra in the water and treat everyone, and I really dont have another area to keep her seperated.

I would, too, just in case.

Look on the bright side, she could have "shot" poo all over you or even worse, your new camera. SEE, things CAN get much worse.
