Help... failure to thrive?

A lot of stuff has went on since I was last on here. Kiki was able to bring up some good information there on how long incubation periods of coccidiosis are.

When I had coccidiosis last year, it seemed one treatment wasn't effective enough. The chicks were showing signs of of deficiency, the vet confirmed and it was suggested that I put them through a second treatment. I still had lots of issues...I don't know if it was because the cocci did so much damage that the chicks and keets weren't getting nutrition or if it was the feed. There was no show in blood but the chicks went from healthy to being ill for 2 hours and then to death.

Your keets may had their intestines damaged to the point where they're not getting the proper nutrition...and that isn't helping. The chicks I had show up with coccidiosis this spring were in a dry kennel in the house. I have all my birds on a completely different starter and things have been much better this year. I followed the .24% directions for the amount of days suggested plus a day. I continued to give the Amprol for the additional percentages of .12 and .06.

If it were me, I'd continue the entire course of Corid down to and including the .06% If you've already been using the starter that you're familiar with (I think you mentioned that) then keep using it.

I'm still treating them all. The turkey are fat round growing things. The keets are just wasting away. I have one that's very lethargic and skin and bones. I tried feeding a slurry but it had no interest. I'm trying not to stress them out by too much close watching or handling. 2-3 of the keets look alright and are slightly larger so they're the ones I'm holding out hope for.

The turkeys are eating both feeds (the feeder trough has the gamebird feed) and I've topped it with some of the chick starter. I also have chick grit available. The one turkey that died was not found in the head twisted back position like the keets. The turkeys are drinking TONS of corid water and having solid poos. Very active and hearty appetites.

The guinea keets on the other hand will drink but their one quart waterer doesn't empty nearly as fast and they are almost all at the explosive diarrhea point where I cannot keep them clean AND dry. I fear that their intestines may just have shut down from the cocci.

Have you made the "drench" batch of Corid and offered the sicker ones a few drops straight to the beak yet?

Have done that for the turkeys twice and the guineas three times.

Gave warmer fluids directly to the weaker of the keets.

One is going downhill as we speak.

That could be the case...it seemed to be in some of mine.

I'm apologize for my lack of clarity, I realized that you are still treating them...I was more meaning to mention continuing treatment at the next percentage down after you're done the .24%. That's what my vet asked me to do. I did that this year as well and it worked well. I'm sorry that another one is on it's way out. :( :hugs

Well two just died in sync. I emailed the video and a long email explaining my discontent to the hatchery about these birds and how I followed their advice yet they continue to be the unhealthiest birds I've ever had and that I will never order from them again. Not sure if they'll view it or do anything but my feeling I get is I shouldn't lose (probably) 100% when they are being cared for properly and treated for the disease they told me to treat. I doubt veterinary intervention would change the outcome for the rest.

I just hate that they had to suffer and die of starvation.

What hatchery did you get them from?

I'm at a loss other than what I've mentioned. I'm sorry to hear two more have gone. :hugs

Yeah... I'd take some dead ones to the county extension office for necropsy but that office is smack dab in the area of totality for the eclipse and the highways are already stop and go... not to mention stores out of gas and food. So earliest would be mid next week...

So the 6 made it through the night. They're eating voraciously and I've seen them drinking so if they survive it's really if they're strong enough to fight the remaining coccidia.

The turkeys are getting in tail feathers and learning to fly (not well, although entertaining). I gave them a roost stick from outside and once they got over their fear of it they like to try to fly and land on it.

Fingers crossed we're on the other side of this but I'll be keeping them on corid for quite some time. I still wouldn't be too surprised to lose the rest of the guineas.
