Alright! so, as everyone knows, its almost spring! and spring means new chicks! and the thought of buying new chicks got me thinking. could i get my hens to sit on their eggs?

So, I have 3 red star hens. (Not sure if they are even laying or not yet. might put a camera in the coop to find out.)

3 black australorps hens. (exactly 41 weeks and 3 days old! are laying)

3 Plymouth rock hens. (age not known. are laying.)

anyways. how can I encourage my hens to start sitting? i get about six eggs a day.

any help would be so very appreciated. I really would like to see one of my hens a mother this year!!!!

Going broody is a hormonal shift, so it's kind of out of our hands to 'make' them broody. Many bantams are serial broodies so people keep them for just that purpose.

You can try leaving fake eggs in one nestbox all the time to make them feel like a clutch is being laid Your Australorps are probably a bit too young yet to think about going broody, but they may get the urge as the weather heats up. Production breeds (your red stars) don't tend to go broody at all, though there's always the exception.
