Hi Chickenliver! I'm new to this too, but I have been able to get the answers to ALL my questions right here! the folks here are wonderful!
My first chicks are 5 1/2 weeks old now and out in their coop which used to be our 8x10 shed. My DH just cut a rectangle hole in the bottom of the backside and put hinges on the bottom, a latch at the top and "Presto" a chicken door! The door drops down so it doubles as a ramp. The roost is 2x4's with the 4" side up, and scrap wood we had laying around made shelves for the nesting boxes. It took only one day to turn a shed into a chicken coop. The run took another day. It's just T posts and chicken wire, with bird netting over the top.
How many chicks are you thinking of getting? I have 26 and they are all heavy breed birds. Bantams won't take up as much space as my girls, I would think.
Let us know how it goes.
