I have two barred rocks that are five weeks old. One is bigger than the other, louder, bossy. One has a comb that is starting to punk up. Any one have any insight as to whether these are girls or boys? They were sold to me as females.

Sorry, but it's probably too soon to tell from their external features. As they get older, they will start to look more like pullets or cockerels, but sometimes it is still hard to tell even up to maturity.

But on a side note, the gender binary is a myth. I have had roosters who want to set on eggs, and hens who crow and mount the other girls.

It's not screaming cockerel to me right off. From the messy barring, though, I'm wondering if it's pure barred Rock. maybe post again in 3ish weeks, we should know for sure by then.

Too early but, I notice the second photo chick has a black wash on her feet - encouraging sign that it's a female (BR?) Are these hatchery chicks?
