HELP!!!! Good news. Bad news. HELP!!!! GRAPHIC PIC in post.

I have to give my vet the credit for trying to save Baby Bad Wing's life, she did it all after hours on a Saturday when she should have been off from work. My son and I helped which was amazing, the bird was sedated and everything.

Unfortunately, my little chicken is not out of the woods yet. I can't get her to drink any water and she has bad diarrhea. I am giving her yogurt and she is drinking and eating that. She's refused the water I've offered as well as her regular food. I tried making a mash with her feed, yogurt and some scrambled eggs but that was a no go too. She has been eating grapes, which I'm sure is not good for her diarrhea, but at least it's something.

Her mouth is open I assume from the pain, as she is not panting.

Later today, we clean out the wound again and try and give her her dose of antibiotics and some pain meds. Wish me luck with all this as I tried once getting a chicken to open it's mouth to no avail. My hubby will help though so maybe together we'll do it.

She's soooo sweet! And is talking softly to us anytime we are near her temporary hospital digs.

Sorry to hear about this - are you sure an egg didn't break inside her? Has everything been fully cleaned out?

I HAVE gotten a chicken to open its mouth when it didn't want to - it's hard but not impossible. If one person holds the chicken, the other one can grab the head with one hand, put your pinky on one side of the neck and cradle the head from all angles so she can't get away. Then use the thumb and forefinger of that same hand to hold near the beak. Use your other hand to help pry the beak open, and use the holding hand to slip a finger in the side of the beak while still holding the head. Got it?

Seriously, I started typing with the thought "I can explain this". It sure sounds clear as mud. Anyway, if you can possibly get her beak open, she definitely needs some nutrition! Good luck.

Wouldn't hurt to give her a little Poly vi Sol without iron... A few drops twice a day if you can get her beak open. Or a few drops of sugar water, or vitamins/electrolites. Just in drops tho so you don't drown her.

I wouldn't feed her any more grapes as that may be the cause of her runny droppings. Try scrambling an egg and give that to her (lots of protein) if that works you can try mixing in some crumbles with the scrambled eggs. Also you could suppliment her water with vitamins and electrolytes. Dip your finger in the water and dribble some down her beak several times a day. You don't want to force it down her throat as she could aspirate into her lungs, I have had good luck with just dribbling it down the side of their beak, they get the urge to swallow when doing this. Prayers to you and her for a speedy recovery

Making good chickie thoughts and projecting them your way.

Best of luck with your girl. Sounds like you are doing a really exceptional job with her.

Baby Bad Wings got fluids by needle yesterday because she wasn't drinking, as well as meds for possible coccidiosis. Diarrhea seems to be gone this morning and she is much perkier! I'm so happy! She is really cute making all these soft noises to everyone who is near. She will continue the meds for coccidiosis and also be getting her antibiotics. She tried flying out of her box this morning so not sure how long I can keep her quiet and away from the others. I may try and let her out for a little while today with her friends and see how she does. I am a totally worried mother hen though and am afraid she might get hurt again so we'll see.

Thanks to everyone for your kind thoughts and prayers, for now, they seemed to have worked!
