I came out this morning, and Oni has a broken beak! It's just the tip of it, before her nostrils, but it's bleeding pretty badly. I tried to clean it off with hydrogen perioxide before I realized that it was half-hinged still on to her face.

Help!!! Will it grow back together if I vetwrap it?

well, I know more about beak injuries in chickens than in geese and as a geeses beak would appear to be more like waterfowl such as ducks and such , please read through the article blow:
http://www.worldwidewounds.com/2003/november/Cousquer/Avian-Wound-Management-Part-2.html
(under BEAK INJURIES where they are repairing the beak of a swan...there is info there I feel will be applicable to your goose)

ETA: Perhaps you can get in touch with a rehabber to ask where you can best get products (or equivalent ones that the article mentions) OTC to treat this if you are absolutely unable to contact a vet? I will continue looking for info for you

...more little tidbits I found on the web for you:
http://www.vet.upenn.edu/schoolreso...blications/bellwether/57/special_species.html
"....After being mauled by a decidedly quarrelsome dog, Goose-Goose was in need of fixing. The domestic brown goose was brought to Ryan Emergency Service by his anxious owner, where his broken bill was set in place by an external metal device and will remain so until healing is complete. Because he must be fed pulverized grain through a feeding tube until his beak fully mends, Goose-Goose has become somewhat of a fixture at Ryan’s Special Species Medicine Clinic—waddling behind students, flapping his wings, and adding a distinct (albeit dissonant) voice to the animal cacophony that is the Ryan Hospital soundtrack."

here is a link to find the nearest avian vet:
http://www.aav.org/vet-lookup/

and here to find rehabber (they will know of a vet or tech perhaps who can advise you)

EDIT: I see Terrie came along and gave you great advice... ignore me cuz she ROCKS when it comes to waterfowl!!!

Yes--that beak of the swan looks almost like Oni's did this morning--except hers is more snapped in half. :-S My father (because he loooves my geese so much!) had the guts to call up "The Goose Lady"--the one who wrote that book about geese. She said to put some neosporin on it and waterproof tape--but that orabase looks just like what she needs.

I stuck her in the barn, put electrolytes in her water, and made her a bed to sleep in--she's all puffed up right now and sleeping a lot. Shini (sister) is with her too. I'm just worried because it seems like she can't really drink that well--she puts her beak in the water and does putters with her mouth, but doesn't actually take a sip. I'm going to try and upload pictures.....

So basically, her bill is just hanging off by her left side. Ugh.

When I saw her this morning (these pics are after I cleaned her up) she had a big goo of matted crap all over her bill.

And I'm off to the drugstore to get some Orabase and Duoderm Extra thin.

LOL! If I could only stop editing my posts---Question! Can you give oral antibiotics to a goose? I know I've been warned about over-medicating goslings with the med. chick starter--but I have teramycin for chickens.....anybody know if it's OK?

From what I can tell, there is about an inch or less gone?
That is not bad at all!! I thought you meant way up farther!!
It is probably sore right now, but as long as she is getting her bill wet by dabbling in the water, it should be fine. I think the worst of it is the blood. That is always scary. If the part gone is barely hanging on, just clip it off with a nail clipper.
I wouldn't put neosporin on it at all. It will get in her water and she will ingest it. Just make sure she has fresh clean water at all times, changing it several times a day. You can make her a mash of crumble moistened with water to a gruel like consistency for her to eat. Then again, make sure her water is fresh and clean so the end of her bill is rinsed. I would feed her only two or three times a day when you can be with her to make sure she is not playing in her food. I don't think she will need antibiotics at all. This is like when you break off your fingernail below the quick. It is sore and it might bleed, but it heals quickly.
If you want to call me, let me know and I will email you my number.

Well, she's doing better now--eating and drinking. It finally stopped bleeding--I'm pretty sure that the tip is now dead, as it looks all brown and gross. They didn't have any duoderm at the drugstore, and she pulled her waterproof bandage off, but I found some all-collagen liquid bandage that I picked up, and it's wonderful! I also put some orabase underneath that.

Thank you all for your quick responses!

Terri---I thought it was up higher orginally too--she had blood literally all over her face, and it's all over the coop as well. Still not sure how she did it, unless she tried to poke her face through the wire and twisted her beak---but it's a very clean cut. Anyhow, she's feeling better now.
