That’s a bummer, Donna! Guineas and fences - blah!!! I do think that they get smarter. We have a dog fence and our guineas last winter kept going in there to forage because that’s where winter clover grows. My dog caught two of them while I was home and I was able to save them. Now the adults will rarely go into the dog yard, but the juveniles do... I have a sign on the dog’s door reminding us to look for guineas before letting the dogs out. My Doberman is too fast, but I’ve trained my beagle to chase the guineas out of the fence! The juveniles are slowly learning that the dog yard is dangerous, and to fly up when they see my dogs...They were free range until I lost one to a hawk, one to a fence and then 4 to getting lost. (Found one on Facebook that I was able to retrieve). I had to hurry and get them something more secure for the winter. I wash hoping they maybe got smarter as they got older.
They seem to get caught behind every hard to reach fences and then go quiet at dark and I'm unable to rescue them. I have so many questions.
My friend had 12 full range for the last nine months and I was jealous because mine are quite the money pit. Two weeks ago his left and never returned, neighbors haven't seen them.
They are tough to gauge because one day you finally have a routine and out of nowhere they all take off or do something unexpected. I'm never prepared
Juveniles are also learning about fences in general. They used to get trapped in the fenced in vegetable garden with an opening. My DH wanted to chase them out since they were stressed, but I left them in there to learn... I don’t think they learn when stressed, they are just reacting instinctively. When they are calm, they can figure things out... I have had to chase them out a few times when they got stuck and I was worried about them, but now they can quickly get out of the vegetable garden without me.
