So something is really up and wrong with on of my chickens. I don’t know which one and it’s starting to freak me out. Can someone please tell me what this is?!?!?! I found in in a puddle of yolk and it’s hard and styrofoam like. And it’s really freaking me out!

How old are your hens? Anyone acting off? What breeds do you have?

If you can figure out which one it is, she may benefit from an epsom salt bath to comfort her, I know they are good for drawing infection out in us , but I think they have to be treated with antibiotic too

That is a lash egg, for sure. You can do a search on it. It is often the result of an infection in the reproductive organs, and it's usually a bad sign. It's a sign of salpingitis. It's hardened pus and tissue not an egg at all.

I've read that you can use Baytril (antibiotics). I don't know the dosage, but you can probably do a search on BYC or even Google it.

I want to warn you that the prognosis isn't good... If you catch it early, though, I think they can sometimes recover. I hope she's ok...

I read this article when I dealt with this situation a few years ago. My girl was a three year old red sex link. I ended up babying her for awhile inside til she felt better. She retired and never laid again. She eventually succumbed to her disease, but lived well up until that point.

If this is in the very early stages, an antibiotic might help. I just treated an eight-year old hen for salpingitis with seven days of oral penicillin. I started her on the antibiotic the minute I saw the lump of pus in her poop. She stopped laying over a year ago, so I am not trying to salvage her egg laying career, just her life.

Most of the time, by the time you see a "lash egg", it's a foregone conclusion that the hen's egg laying days are over. It is a bacterial infection, though, so it's not an outrageous idea to treat it with an antibiotic.

Definitely lash egg. You need to figure out which hen this is asap. I would treat with Baytril/enrofloxacin 6.81mg per pound of bird twice daily. I’d probably go a full week.
