HELP HELP URGENT DISASTER!!

Bad news

So I was keeping an eye on the chick for several hours after the incident. It seemed to be okay, no more bleeding, I could see it breathing, but other than that it was relatively still and quiet. The membrane was staying moist and soft with the damp paper towel partially covering it and I figured that I'd just leave the chick alone and let it come out when it was ready, being that the outer membrane and shell were mostly removed and it should have been easy for it to kick its way out. Around 3 AM I heard very soft chirping coming from the chick. I checked it several times to see if it was struggling, but didn't see anything to be concerned about. The membrane was soft and moist still, the chick was breathing normally, so I didn't want to rush things again and put it back in the incubator with the paper towel. I heard occasionally cheeping but nothing significant, no rocking around or loud distressed calls, so I figured just let it work its way out. An hour later I heard rustling in the incubator. I was sure the chick had finally decided to come out of its shell, but when I looked it was another chick that had hatched and was hopping around. I checked the egg and found that the chick had died. I'm not sure what happened. The beak was sticking out of the shell, but other than that it had stayed the same. The membrane was still moist and easy to pull off, so I'm not sure why it didn't just kick the rest of its way out if it was ready, and if not why it would have expired in such a short time with a stable temp and humidity level. These little guys are so fragile that sometimes it's impossible to know why exactly they die, one minute they're cheeping and about to hatch, an hour later they're dead. It is a comfort, though, to have a healthy newborn chick, and a relief to know that the incubator is working again and hopefully the rest of the eggs will hatch soon just as easily as this one did.

Yeah. Unfortunately I'm having more problems today that could jeopardize the rest of the eggs, during the incident the thermometer got wet and warped the cardboard backing. So now I don't know if it's the right temp in the incubator. It's registering as being 110 degrees this morning but I don't know if that's correct or if the cardboard just shrank

I had 2 die and 3 that didn't hatch at all in the most recent round. 1 had wry neck, the other one I thought was fine but died when I went to school and out of the 3 that didn't hatch 2 were scissor beak and one chick was huge for its shell. It sucks babies shouldn't have to die :(

Yeah, it does :/ Sorry about your bad luck. And it's so weird because you think you'll get better at it as time goes on and you'll get it down to a science after so many hatches... but my latest one has been the worst yet. The first hatch I did had no deaths and I just figured that it would always be that easy! And after adjusting the temp and humidity and everything just right, it's disappointing when things just go completely wrong.

My bro's picking up a thermometer for me today, I hope it's accurate and not too late...

Well, one good thing about raising a lone chick is that these baby quail get super attached to you when you're the only thing they have to snuggle up to lol :) Once they have another bird in their life, they seem to forget all about you and start getting skittish.

lol cute. Well three thermometers are now registering it at around 90 degrees, so I'm guessing that's the correct temp. I always thought that the smaller thermometer (that was supposed to be more accurate) was the correct temp, but maybe that one's been off all along. That would explain why my peachick is so late at hatching... would also explain how it managed to survive after the temp shot up 10 degrees so many times. Maybe I've always had it set too low but this is the first time I'm actually noticed a late hatch since I've never actually kept track of the days before... Hmmm.

Turning up the heat is so nerve wracking on this incubator.

Well if the built-in thermometer is registering 93 degrees... and the wall thermometer is registering 93 degrees... and the new thermometer is registering 93 degrees... and the cardboard thermometer is registering 103 degrees... I'm guessing the cardboard thermometer is a little off lol
