Hi my hen has a bad impacted crop. I looked up how to do it and it seems pretty straight forward. I have iodin, topical analgesics, gauze etc. but I don’t know how to suture the hen’s crop. Is there a thread or video I can watch that explains how to correctly suture an impacted crop? Thanks. (I haven’t operated on her yet)

I would recommend that crop surgery should be done by a vet. But when thatbis not possible, and you have no other choice, I would watch some videos, get all equipment ready and some one to hold and even another to hand you equipment. There are 2 layers that have to be sutured or super glued closed—the crop and the skin. Here are some videos, and most are hard to see:

If you have no access to a vet, just as @Eggcessive has already pointed out you need at least one better two persons to assist.

Do not use the topical analgesic, chickens do not respond well it is toxic to them.

There is quite a big blood vessel situated across the front of the crop you should be aware of.

Cut off the feathers surrounding the planned incision.

Very important: Be very careful not to glue or suture the crop to the skin.

Good luck and let us know how it went.

nearest vet wont take her. I’m obviously not experienced enough to do surgery. I’ve done everything, crop bra, massages, oil, soft foods, nothing works. This chicken is not bright. I’m just going to cull her, thanks for your help guys it’s just not worth the effort if she’s going to die from infection

Before you cull her you could try this:

Separate her in a crate without bedding.

Method 1)

Give her some 2-3 tablespoons of lactulose or 2 slightly crushed tablets of Dulcolax.

Offer plenty of water, nothing else.

Keep massaging gently for 10 minutes while holding her upright.

Repeat after 4 hours.

Method 2)

Instead of water give her Coke (Coca-Cola), this helps to dissolve whatever organic matter might be causing the problem.

Offer her grainy sand, no other food.

Keep massaging the crop gently for 10 minutes while holding her upright.

Repeat after 4 hours.

If she is not better the next day, repeat the procedure every 6 hours.
Usually they will pass whatever obstructed the passage within 2-3 days.
