:rolleyes:Man, I've got a cold too! Been sick for about 3 days now. Sure wish I had a big pot of homemade chicken noodle soup, I would fix it, but sure don't feel like it. Drink some hot tea with honey and lemon. That's really good!

Wanna hear what a nurse has learned about colds and such? This is as straight as I can give it to you.
1) Vit. C in the tablet form is not well metabolised by the body and high doses are just excreted in the urine....therefor, not utilized. An 8 oz. glass of orange juice is the most effective way of getting Vit. C in your system quickly, but I recommend eating leafy green vegetables alot and often to boost your immune system. If more Vit. C is required, drink more orange juice, the simple sugars it contains leave your blood stream quickly and aren't as harmful as other sugary drinks. Keep in mind, though, that the body can only metabolize so much of the vitamin and the excess will be excreted as waste.

2) Don't drink any liquids high in complex sugars (pop, kool-aids, sweetened fruit juices) as they immediately affect your immune system's capability to function well. The main reason diabetics are so prone to infection is due to the high levels of sugar in their blood, so don't add any if you can help it.

3) 99.9% of all colds or flu are viral, which means antibiotics do NOT work. It is merely coincidence that a virus will run it's course in 10-14 days and, since antibiotics are usually prescribed for a 10 day course, one will believe the antibiotics helped when in fact it is merely timing.

4) Now comes the funny part. Old timey remedies often have a basis in medical facts. I have used this on numerous occasions in the past for allergies and cold symptoms, but I rarely have either anymore and I will tell you why later on: Drink a very hot drink, while taking a very hot bath, apply Vick's Vaporub to your chest and on the soles of both feet (yes, feet!), wrap yourself up in the warmest blankets and stay in them for as long as you can bear it. Within a matter of hours you will see a lessoning of your symptoms. I know, I know....remember, I'm a nurse! BUT, this treatment actually speeds up your metabolic rate, thus increasing the response of your white blood cells to the site of infection, monocytes respond to the virus, and eosinophils to histamine receptors, more quickly. The camphor has therapeutic qualities that I haven't fully researched but I have read somewhere that it has an anti-inflammatory effect. I know this sounds kooky but I have never seen it fail for simple colds and winter allergies! Don't take Tylenol or Motrin with this process. A slight fever indicates your immune system is fighting on it's own. For high fevers don't mess around...go to the DOC!

Now, as to why I haven't had a cold in more than 7 years....I stay away from processed foods and most storebought foods, drink only good, filtered water and unsweetened fruit juices. No dairy, only deer meat on occasion, no processed meats of any kind. Lots of green leafy vegetables, plenty of onions(they contain sulfur-good for you) only sweeten things with nonpastuerized honey. I buy local raw honey and consume a teaspoon a day. Daily brisk walk of at least 30 min. I only use vinegar and olive oil on my salads and eat only whole wheat bread that I make. I'm not a vegetarian but I lean heavily in that direction!

My parents are extreme vegetarians, ages 76 and 73, and haven't had a cold, or any other illnesses, in over 15 years!!! That includes allergies!!!! I don't know of any miracle concoction that one can take in the winter time or any other time that will combat the effects of all the trash and impurities we pollute our immune systems with on a daily basis. Best just to eat right in the first place. If you have to take a special potion, chances are you have a system that is already compromised.

Good Luck! And get well!
