Help! How to palpate eggbound hen internally

My hen is eggbound, panting and pale. I internally palpated her with olive oil. Now I'm wondering if I'm palpating right. Am I in her rectum or cloaca? I can feel the egg thru what feels like a layer of skin. Shouldn't I feel the egg shell itself? The egg is hard and formed,

How do you get into the cloaca and not the rectum?
