I have 4 duck eggs hatching 3 are indian runners one externally pipped yesterday at 3pm and has only got bill out there was loads of water around the pip hole and it was making gurgling sounds so i reduced humidity and very very slightly used tweezers to take away only a tiny bit of dead shell to make the hole bigger so that it wouldnt drown the other one externally pipped yesterday at 3am but has made no progress but is moving the other two i very quickly candled i know your not meant to open bator but was sure they were dead but could see them moving although not sure but only one has internally pipped i put lid back on have i done the right thing and is it going to have to be assisted i dont know what to do feel so stupid the humidity must have been too high for the first one to be soaked and gurgling

Sounds like you did the right thing! :clap

Ducks commonly take 24-48 hours to zip after the first pip, so don't stress over the time. Watch the bits of membrane that are visible. You want them to stay white, to wet-looking gray. You don't want them turning tan to brown.
Its also common for them to make more than one pip. Ducks like to knock around in there, while they get into position, so be on the lookout for more pips, before the actual zip starts.

Good luck, and keep us posted please!

Thankyou for the help glad to have some reasurance im going to keep an eye on them and keep posted what does it mean if the membrane turns brown

As long as they are moving inside, the membrane will stay white or even sorta wet looking. If it starts turning brown, then they aren't moving around as much, and it can get stuck to the feathers and can lock them in place, so they can't turn to zip.

But also remember, if the humidity was high, and there is goo in there, if it gets on the membrane, it could turn it brown too. That may not mean its getting stuck, but that stuff does get brown and hard. So just keep a good eye on it. I think you will know if it needs more help.

I candled again i made the decision to put safety holes in as two were meant to hatch yesterday they are moving but one seems to be moving very little the third one is wriggling in the egg like crazy but hasnt zipped hasnt made much progress since yesterday im going to wait till tommorow morning and if nothing i think i might start making bigger holes in air sac
Do u think it would be best to wait for morning or could they die before then
I really dont want to loose any
Thanks for all the help

If you did safe holes, they should be ok till morning, but it’s really a call you have to make.
Have the air cells all drawn down like this? Like they have moved more into the air cell and the air cell is odd shape now?

There was still no progress this morning so i started to assist the inner membrane was white and very tough so i used coconut oil and broke the shell a little bit and one still has lots of veins so im going to leave that one and the other is making eating motions with its bill so i think that one is still absorbing the third one when i started to assist was dead it had externally pipped and had just stopped feel really bad i should have helped it last night but was still moving and didnt want to assist to early im thankfull tho that the other two seem to be doing ok

Sorry meant it had internally pipped

Sorry you lost one. But it sounds like you are doing fine. Slow and cautious. :fl
Let us know how it goes!

One of them hatched was quite abit of blood in shell and some veins but its drying off and otherwise ok the other one has been hatching for two days now when i started to assist i could see the airsac which was quite large and accidently started opening it wrong way so its back is exposed but i didnt break membrane so covered it with coconut oil and put damp cloth under the bit that was exposed i managed to find where its bill is and made a hole around there it is poking out and moving but not making any progress there are still veins tho
