Help! I don’t know what’s going on here!

Have you checked her for bugs? We had some chickens acting pretty stupid cause of bugs. It seems like right after we wet their baby food down a little. Maybe bugs hatching out when wet. Just a suggestion.

Yes. I sure did. I thought of that Because that’s exactly how she’s acting like she has bugs all over her.:barnie

My 6 year old salmon faverolles rooster has started showing signs of wry neck when he is resting. He goes to sleep standing up outside in the yard, and his head goes clear under him. He sleeps like that as well on the roost at night, but when he is awake an alert he goes around pecking seeds and bugs in the yard all day long. It doesn’t seem to hurt him, and it has gone on for the whole winter. It is worrisome, but as long as she is getting plenty to eat and drink, I would hold out hope that she will get better.

Things have really gotten bad. As far as the neck. I’m pretty convinced it’s a cranial hernia. Any advice as far as treatment plan and prognosis is so very appreciated. (Ie: is it best to try and keep the head up- versus between the legs - in hopes that the swelling goes down and the ulcer resolves itself- or is there some sort of medication that can be administered?)
Not getting much food at all. And only getting food when hand fed. She’s not really drinking anymore. I think with the way her neck is positioned- it makes it nearly impossible for her to tip her head back to swallow. I’m feeding her mash of her purina starter, with lots of h20, some diced egg, sprinkled with save-a-chick electrolyte and probiotic and nutridrench. Has interest in eating when I prop her up to eat and kind of balance her bottom beak on my thumb.

What ulcer and swelling? What has you convinced that it is a cranial hernia and not just wry neck? No one wants to have Mareks in their chickens, but that is still a possibility. Wry neck occurs more often because of many possible reasons, but wry neck can be an early sign of Mareks.

Since she is not getting enough food, I would consider tube feeding temporarily. You can give enough food for the whole day in 2 or 3 short feeding. But the crop should be checked to make sure that it is emptying properly. It should be flat and empty in early morning before she has eaten. If not, there could be a crop or gizzard problem which can be possible with Mareks if there are tumors.
