We used a tote but also have the cat/dog situation. We ended up cutting some small pieces of hardward cloth, duck taping the rough edges and putting those on top of the totes with something like a book to hold it down. It worked well. 'Course, it depends on how determined your other critters are. Ours only wanted to look and sniff, not eat. This way they could look without getting in the chick's faces.

Dove for a brooder, i got a rubbermaid tall container and cut a hole in the lid the size of the heat lamp you will use, not much bigger. I put chicken wire(heavy stuff) on the top and zip tied it to the plastic lid. Then I put a heat lamp on top of it. You can tie it on or just let it sit on the top. Put a thermometer in there but basically that is all there is too it. You can see inside and they can eat and drink and run and play. Works great till they are about 2-3 weeks old. then you can put them in a bigger brooder in the hen house. or build them a chicken tractor etc.

Good luck and congrats on trying your best to keep them all alive!

The plastic container might work, but I also have cats and a dog.... That's why I thought of the cat carrier. I also have dog crate that I'm not using, but I just don't have the space to put it in the house. I might use the crate in the garage, when they are old enough/big enough to not get out of it. I have power out in the garage, so the lamp should be enough to keep them warm.

How do you think my other chickens will react to the chicks? I have two coops, the new one and the dog house and pen I converted to a coop, so I can keep them separated if I need to....

OOOh, I could hide it in the bath tub!

I picked up PINE bedding today at walmart. I'm really low on cash at the moment, and I might just use a card board box...... if only a few hatch, I can try my cat carrier.

Stick with me, I have the McGyver gene in me I think. Duck tape and some chewing gum and we can have something made in no time (might be a big sticky mess and no one can speak but hey we will have something!

A box would work in the meantime. The main thing is a light to keep them warm. I have been known to stick totes in my bathtub too. I would put some old towels or an old blanket down first, especially if using a box as tubs tend to be a bit cool, especially in winter. You may want to put a good thick layer of shavings too.

I noticed the other day when I was at Walmart the price of there shavings ($5.00) You get much much more at the feed/hardware store when you buy the big horse sized bag (cost about $5.50-$6.00) and will last a lot longer, since your gonna be changing them like crazy. Just wanted to let you know !!! Also yes a box would be fine !! Totes were on sale the other day at out Walmart for $4.00. I taped a few boxes together one time and used that, worked ok !! How many days do you have left now ??

I just got home, and I have five pipping eggs out of 10 fertile!! This is sooooooo exciting! I'm wondering when I should pop the vents on my incubator?
