Help! I just got some free 10 day old incubated eggs! *hatching!!*

They are probably Leghorns, but could be any of the industrial breeds.

BTW, I have eight now!

I'm using an aquarium for a brooder, with a nice lid on the top, and it used to have a turtle in it, so I'm wondering what should I clean it with? I want to kill any possible germs from the turtle, but I don't want any fumes that might hurt little fluffy chicks... Any ideas?

If it were me I would just use some anti bacterial (sp? sorry) soap, rinse real good. I would say a little bleach with water but I think its to late for that since after you use bleach its a good idea to put things in the sun to get rid of the fumes. So I would say no to that.... Just make sure you scrub nice and good and you should be fine !! Did you get/have a heat lamp ?? The temp should be around 90ish when they come out of the bator, think about it this way... If they are all huddling under the heat they are to cold if they are scatered around the edges and panting its to hot.... A good way to do it is put the heat lamp on one side (about 90ish) that way if they would like to move out from the heat they can. I have noticed in my hatched some chicks like it warmer than others.
Its also a good idea to keep an eye on the temp so It doesnt get to hot !!

CONGRATS on number 8.... As far as sexing goes im not sure with that breed if they can be sexed this early, my guess would be no !! Are they all white ??

WOW !!!! They sure are comming fast !!! How many more to go ??

Well, I have 13 in the brooder, and I'm keeping the other 6 eggs in the 'bator just in case, but I think they are all infertile. I'm having some trouble keeping the brooder at the right temp, so I had to get out the foil and towels to try to insulate one end, and got the temp up. So far I've sen one chick drink water, so I'm sure the rest will follow soon.

Usally they will follow, its not a bad idea to dip each of there beaks in the water (not to much, dont want to drowned them)

So the other 6 are just sitting and doing nothing ?? I would give them an extra day or to since you had a drop in temp !! When you candled those did you see a "blob" in them ??

ETA: what a great hatch rate for eggs that went thought all they did !!

Ok, I will dip their beaks today. I've seen a few eating too. Yes, I'm going to give the other six an extra day. When I candled them, some were just bright yellow, no blob, and I marked them Infertile. A couple I marked with a ?, and maybe they will hatch late?

Yes, isn't that a great hatch rate! Can anyone help me with the math, how to make 13 of 18 into a percentage? I think it's 72.2 % is that right?

well if all 18 hatched that would be 100% so 13 hatched (5 less that 18) that would be 75% !!??

I'm not great at the math stuff, but belive its 75% !!

I so wish you could get pics of them after all the waiting I did !! LOL!!!!
