Hello all,
I am new to this community so please bear with me. My wife and I have wanted to purchase some chickens for a long time now, but we have been uncertain of the laws in our area. Finally, we came across backyardchickens.com and we are in search of some guidance. We live in Orange County (Orlando) Florida and we would like to own 4-6 chickens primarily for eggs and pets for our children. Our County Ordinance states that we are allowed to have “30 birds or less”. However, it states that the lot must be “located a minimum of 100 feet from all residential zoned districts and 50 feet from the property line”. Our lot is located in a neighborhood and our back yard is only 75 feet long by 50 feet wide. We back up to a conservation area so I do not believe that we would disturb the neighbors. Is there any ways around this ordinance? Our second issue is that our HOA bylaws (WRITTEN IN 1986) states that we are not allowed to own chickens. However below that it states that we are allowed to own “domesticated pets”. Can’t a chicken be a “domesticated pet”? PLEASE HELP! ANY ADVICE IS GREATLY APPRECIATE! THERE HAS GOT TO BE SOME KIND OF LOOP HOLE HERE!
