HELP!!!!!!!! I Think Barred Rock Roo Sick!!!!Plz any Advice!!!!!!!

I'd keep force feeding him dampened food, too - maybe make a soup of the food and the vitamins. I'm afraid the vitamins might not do much good if he doesn't have some nutritional base. That's where parrot formula comes in (which can replace the yogurt).

Cobalt also seemed to have a SLOW recovery from his ordeal. It was hard to determine the positive signs, such as an improvement in coloring, as well, because they happened so gradually. The fact that Massala doesn't appear to be getting any worse is a good sign, though. Just keep up with the care you're giving him, unless you think a vet visit is in order. Eventually, Cobalt did improve... but it took about two weeks or so to really feel like he was out of the woods. By now, though, he's back to crowing like his old self!

Good luck, and hang in there!

good for you jesterseye about cobalt! i wish the best of luck to yall!

Thanks for inquiring about his health again:

I want to be honest but I wanna hope at the same time. I feel he is not getting any worst. his color has been returning a little bit, when i fed him yolk and yogurt today he ate it with more appetite than usual. Course he hasn't been on his perch, crowed, or mated with his hen and of course tail feathers are gone. but he isn't losing any weight any more....i feel likeit is with cobalt, it will be a slow recovery but maybe a recovery after all. Yet I don't want to be to hopeful so i am continuing to watch and pray.

Thanks yall for your help....

P.S. his poop is sometimes watery....

Cobalt had watery poo also... I figured it was because he wasn't eating enough "solids" to thicken it properly. It seemed to improve to a more normal consistency after I started force feeding him, though.

Massala update:

Ok so a part of me wanted to believe he was getting better, his color looked a little better he seemed a little perkier but then today came and he was sulking alot in the corner. He doesn't sleep in the perch still, no crowing, and he hunches alot.

then tonight after giving him some yolk and yogurt, i force fed him his polyvisol, and then i turned my back to wipe up his watery poop when my father said "look he's still going!" and he obviously didn't know it was unusual for chickens but out came a long strand of nasty poop and i am sorry to those who are reading this for i know this is nasty, but i must include this, for the sake of my poor boy. I have included a pic of it, warning its nasty but its included nevertheless.

i at first thought it was a worm but i held my breath and messed it up alot to find it was hard and stringy but not a worm.

What do I do now?! I really don't wanna take him to the vet..... I don't wanna lose my baby boy. Should i try to force feed him some oatmeal?

again thank u everyone for yalls help, it is so appreciated.

I don't think it's too bad. It's possible he just passed some stuff he's been holding inside. Is he still looking like he's better?

Hmmm, I never saw any poo like that from Cobalt (or any of my chickens, for that matter). I have some good news and bad news to share on the subject of my own chickens, however... The good news is that Cobalt is looking very good to me, along with one of his hens!

The bad news is that the other hen is now looking pretty bad off. She may have actually been sick much earlier but she never showed such obvious signs as Cobalt. She was the hen who had lost some of her wing feathers, but I had contributed it to over-mounting by the large "heavy-class" rooster; which prompted me to separate the breeds. I have found that often the males get weaker sooner and more easily than the females (of many species), so that might account for why it took so long for us to notice her illness. The feather loss may have actually been due to something else, as in the case of Massala.

The hen (named Pearl) is panting a lot and her comb has gotten all limp and is hanging down one side of her face. (She has a large comb for a female because she is a mediterrean breed: Blue Andalusian.) She continued to act relatively normally, so my son never realized she was sick. After he saw her comb this morning, though, he knew something was wrong. It turns out she must have been losing weight, because her breastbone is really sticking out. At times, all the chickens have been seen panting from the heat, so we didn't know that she was under an unusual amount of stress until now.

I've brought her in the house and have started a treatment regime like I did for Cobalt. She acts quite different than he did, however, and is eating the yolk on her own. I also bought her some worms for an extra protein treat, but she hasn't figured out what to do with it yet. She even wandered over to the cat food and ate a few peices to check it out. I don't see how she could have lost so much weight unless she just stopped filling her crop as often. Her crop is filled a bit now, in fact, but I think it could get bigger. Her poo is very watery and creamy looking, which might be from eating the yolk... not sure. I'm going to force feed her sometimes, and am offering her parrot formula with nutri-drench, as well as an assortment of tasty, protein-rich goodies to tempt her appetite. That's all I can think of to do for her right now... I really need to put weight on her as fast as possible! If anyone has any other ideas, please share them with me and with ColtsRox.

How is Massala doing? I am now nursing a sick hen, who is missing some secondary wing feathers (cause unknown). I'm force feeding her the baby parrot mash and offering her crumbled egg yolk, as well as giving her the Nutri-drench treatment.

I wanted to let you know that I have found that a small syringe is very useful for feeding the wet parrot mash. The baby spoon I had been trying to use was way too messy and ineffective for getting the food into her beak. The syringe is working GREAT, so I thought I'd let you know, in case it could help you with Massala. Good luck!
