Please, if anyone can help. I just brought home a little sultan...less than a week old. I was cleaning up some pasty butt and accidentally knocked loose the umbilicus...some of the little 'guts' are hanging out. I've put him in by himself. Is there any way to save him? I feel terrible. I know not to bother with the umbilicus but it was so close to all the yuk that I just cleaned it right off....oh please help...

All his little guts are coming out. Is it best to cull him? Oh man, how stupid can a person be?

Please don't panic! We all make mistakes, and it was an accident. Take a deep breath. There is plenty that you can do to try and save him!

Make sure to put a damp sponge in the box with him, it will keep the humidity up so that whatever is coming out doesn't dry out. If he isn't responding, try giving him a bit of sugar water (dribble it down his beak if he won't take it willingly), and this should perk him up a bit.

If at all possible, please try and post a picture so that we can see exactly what the damage is. It will help a lot in helping you figure out what to do.

I'm sorry I couldn't be more help. Best of luck with him! I'm sure someone else will chime in who has dealt with this before.

How is the little one doing? Are you able to upload pictures?
If you feel that it might help to wrap it, I would recomend using the bandage wrap that sticks to itself. It's kinda like an ace bandage but it's not as wide and it's made of the material like non stick gauze.
I've never dealt with this myself so hopefully someone will respond who has experience.
Stay calm. Chicks can be pretty durable and hopefully the little one will bounce back.

After trying, unsuccessful, to repair the damage, I culled him

He started bleeding and everything turned purple. Seemed the more he moved, more of his intestines came out. I couldn't leave him like that. He was pecking at himself and damaging everything even more. Maybe I should have waited and uploaded pics for everyone to see. I cried for hours. I've never killed anything, nonintentionally, before. Still very upset this morning. Been looking forward to having a sultan for a long time. Thanks for the help. Hopefully, this won't happen again.

I'm so so sorry for your loss

So sorry! You had the best of intentions. Take heart in knowing that your post may help others to be more careful doing this. I would have never thought something like that would be possible. Now I know to be very careful.

Oh dear, I didn't know that could happen with one that old! I'm terribly sorry for your loss, but thanks so much for sharing. I now know to watch out for that.
