Thanks! I think it's a marbled orb spider. I had never seen this one before. I have seen the argiope one before, but never this one. I DO NOT like spiders, but these are beautiful. And their webs are amazing!

Seriously if you don't like spiders or don't know what it is, why bother posting.

It is either Araneus marmoreus or Araneus gemma - Not an expert on East Coast orbweavers, really. . .

I'm guilty. I "removed" the web when I was sweeping, but I DID NOT destroy the spider. My yard is landscaped for wildlife, and I do not destroy any wildlife. Well, except for ants, maybe. How do you know it was female? Because it was so "plump"?

Male orbweavers are much smaller and thinner than females and are typically not colored as the spider in the pic (they are usually brown and few species grow to that size). Males also have two bulbous appendages (pedipalps) extending from near their mouth (not completely clear from the pic). Finally, most male orbweavers in temperate zones are long dead at this point in the year. The group of spiders yours comes from is very diverse and it often requires a key to identify the species. They are good to have around!

No one else had answered and I was trying to be light hearted about it...why do you find it offensive?

chickensducks&agoose :

I posted so that the post would stay near the top, even though I didn't know the answer, I wanted to be a little bit helpful.

Thank you so much!
