We just got some new babies, and all of them have known breeds except for the "mystery chick" we received. Are there any ideas on what she might be? She has red, brown, and silver/white coloring and what look to be bands on her wings. She also has bare legs. Thank you in advance!

Hi there, welcome to BYC! :frow

That looks like it's going to be a barred or cuckoo... cockerel.. maybe sex link??

The big white spot on his head... and wide white barring are what indicates cockerel to me.

Which hatchery? :pop
Thank you for the reply and welcome! Gonna cross my fingers that the baby isn't a too, but we'll see! The babies came from Murray McMurray.

Looks like a barred rock cockerel. Any eggs I've hatched of these have been roosters and always have that spot on their head.
Barred Rocks won't have any brown at hatch and the leg color is also incorrect.

But guess the gender/breed is one of my favorite games to practice. Hope you have as much fun trying to figure stuff out and learning as I do. :wee

Hope you are enjoying BYC also! :frow

Thank you for the welcome! Do you have any guesses as to this little baby's gender? We're hoping not a roo! The baby is so sweet though, we have decided we won't give him/her away if she does turn out to be a rooster.

I'm going with Egyptian Fayoumi cockerel.
That's actually a good guess. I hadn't looked at that one yet and never seen them before... but looks very much like a possibility.

My other guess was going to be maybe Cream Legbar... but your idea seems more on par with what we are seeing here... according to hatchery photos.. top CCL, bottom Fayoumi.

Also, the EF description at Mc Murray seems to match...

"They are attractively marked with silvery white hackle and white bars on black background throughout the body plumage. Leg color can be either willow green or slate blue. Baby chicks are highly colored in brown, black, and white markings on the back and a brownish purple head color."

Nice detective work! I hope I never stop learning. :pop

Thank you both for your detective work! He totally looks like one! I'm excited to see how he (or maybe she-still having hope for a she haha) turns out as he grows!
