Hi everyone, I am the proud new owner of Thing 1 and Thing 2, my new ducklings!!

I have no idea what these guys could be or whether they're male or female.... any ideas?? The yellow one (Thing 1) is quite the little yapper lol :)

Not yet! But you'll be able to tell as soon as they start quacking - males sound low and raspy, females have that traditional 'quack' sound.
Thats awesome! They're about a month old from what I was told, should they start quacking soon? I'm like a kid at Christmas with these guys :)

Pekin and Mallard. Rouens have two eye stripes. :)

Not always, and I don't think a mallard duckling would be the same size as a pekin duckling at the same age. Also, if you look closely, the duckling does have two eye stripes.

Ooh, I should mention, the rouen/mallard? Is a bit tinier than the pekin. What is the difference between mallards and rouens? They look very much the same to me

They are extremely similar in color and pattern, but rouens are much larger and cannot fly, while mallards are smaller and can fly. Also, your duckling does appear to have two eye stripes anyway ( a smaller one under the large one can be just made out in the first picture), so that method of telling them apart, which is sometimes accurate, would indicate that it is a rouen anyway :)

I've had pekin and mallard ducklings together, and they are not even close to the same size as each other :)

Quick edit: This is not my picture, but you can see the size difference here when they are fully grown between a mallard and a pekin: http://dfwurbanwildlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/mallard-oddcouple-001.jpg
