Help! I'm looking for a dog breed that....

If you are thinking of cocker spaniels, watch out for the tan or buff colored ones. For some reason, that color is more aggressive than the solid black. Have you thought about irish setters or gordon setters? Nice dogs

take what people say with a grain of salt because

#1: Reputable breeders will strive not to produce dogs with behavioral problems
#2: seperation anxiety has some to do with training issues. some dogs can genetically have it, but humans can cause it too
#3 I don't think color effects temperment at all

If the whole family loves Golden Retrievers, and has experience with them, then I think you should probably stick with that breed.

If fencing the whole yard is not an option, think about WHY you would need a fence, and how to accomplish that differently. Maybe you can fence a small portion for the dog to use as a toilet, if that's the important point. Or install one of those overhead dog runs (cable with a leash that slides along it.) You can let the dog out (attach it to the leash) for bathroom breaks, and it may also run back and forth and smell the world for a few minutes, and then you bring it back inside to be with the family again.

Plenty of people think poodles look stupid, but that's mostly caused by how their hair is often cut. Try images of poodles retrieving to see them looking more like normal dogs. (I don't know enough about poodles to recommend them or rule them out, so I'm just suggesting you research them a little.)

This is a myth. Color is not linked to aggression. It is possible that you saw more aggressive tan/buff cockers locally because a local breeder was producing that specific color, and that breeder also happened to have crappy temperaments. Temperament is genetic, but is not linked to color. It's a correlation does not equal causation thing.

Poodles are awesome dogs! They can be a bit fussy but they're very cool. I've been waiting for the right time to get one myself.

my next dog will be a poodle. Cant decide if I want a small standard, or a mini.

I really like Alue standards, which really makes it hard for me to decide, because I really want a dog from them, but I think standards might be too tall for me

Our yard is very easy to fence part of, because the rocky 'cliffs' form nice walls, just not FULLY fence it. Have I said this multiple times? Yes. Am I often brushed off? Yes. Do I know why? Nope!

Poodles are nice, but I'd worry about not giving them proper mental stimulation, and also, they're just very......curly. Which, even when not done up in a weird poofy hairdo, isn't really a favorite of ours.

Corgis do not need tons of exercise, just a daily walk, some obedience training, and other mental stimulation (even if it is just from play time). They do bark some but I would never characterize them as yappy. Especially if you only have one. Two are more likely to have occasional “bark-offs”.

Oh well that’s good then!! Sorry wasn’t really sure. They do definitely need some though like you mentioned because far too many people think they’re just fat couch potatoes that need none hahah so I more just wanted to emphasize that but tons probably wasn’t right either. Definitely not like a border collie. and I’m sure they become fat couch potatoes after exercise.
