Teddy is a toy poodle Maltese mix.
He would probably be too small for what you're looking for, and he is very curly and floofy.
But he is incredibly smart. He understands everything we say. He heard us talking on the phone with the vet and he ran and hid.
He knows all sorts of tricks and is very willing to please. He loves to run and chase squirrels but will snooze the day away if he feels like it. He cuddles up to me every night and love to sit with me.

Maltese are known to be lap dogs, and poodles are known to be active and smart. This, for us, was the perfect mix.

So, from experience, I can tell you that a poodle would love to ho for daily walks just as much and he'd like to chill on the couch with you. They are obedient (with a good trainer) and very willing to please. They also LOVE water (though Teddy hates it lol).
Get a mix of a golden and a poodle and you might get just what you want.
If you want a smaller one see if you can find a golden and miniature poodle mix.

We have a golden retriever puppy because our previous golden passed away to stomach cancer in October. My family insisted in only goldens, so we know exactly why your family loves them, they are such a wonderful, loving breed. I honestly thing an American Eskimo is what you're looking for temperament and size wise.
