Help, Im new and i have some questions.

At mypetchicken.com, they have a short survey that you can fill out, and it tells you the best breeds to get, based on your needs. 1/2 acre is plenty of space for a couple of chickens to putter around in, but find out your local chicken ordinances first, and make sure that they will be safe from the weather and predators. Once you're set up, chickens are very low maintanance. You'll have a ball with them.

Hi there, I 2 am new 2 this. My husband is in the process of building our coop and run. What is a good brown egg layer, we only want to have laying hens, we don't care to have a rooster. We went to our local feed and seed store and asked about where we might get some chickens from and we were told it's the wrong time of year, you have 2 get chicks in the spring. Any suggestions as where we might find any. Thanks

Try your local craigslist as someone may have chicks at this time of year on there from a broody or something. If you only want girls though and don't want to worry about a rooster, get golden or black sexlinks. They are terrific layers and can be sexed 100% by color when they hatch.
