Help!! Injured Guinea!

Quote:
as long as the cut is not wide you should be fine. Do not give the bird any pain relievers.

Give the poor thing a few treats, some electrolytes and maybe some poly vi sol.

You did the correct thing. Isolation, quiet, cool and plenty of food and water.

Good Luck, these birds are darn hardy. Just watch for signs of infection as the Guineas will get near death before they show you signs of infection.

why would you consider culling if it just happened?

If you have any antibiotic ointment, put some of that in & around the wound and gently pull the skin edges together if you can. Other than that, keep it warm & in a safe place & give it some time. You said you came home "to only one guinea in the pen". Did you have others that escaped? Has a predator gotten into your pen? how many were in the pen to begin with? If you think a predator has gotten into your pen, you need to really beef it up before putting your injured guy back out there. Check every bit of the perimeter and make sure something has torn through or dug under your fencing. Hope your guinea heals up just fine.

I wouldn't cull, See how he is doing. It's amazing how resilient they can be. I just had one of our keets attacked by the adults. They ripped off all the back feathers and made a good size hole under the 1 wing. I cleaned the dirt out of the wounds. Covered with triple antibiotic without pain reliever. Sprayed with red kote and put under heat lamp. Also gave a little sugar water to perk up. (we thought the keet was dead when we first found it). He/she is looking really good now and it's only been 2 days. Good luck. Those crazy birds are pretty awesome. Keep us posted.

why would you want to cull?

i wouldn't cull unless it is the only thing you CAN do and it sounds like the guinea will be ok with some TLC and love. guineas are tough (at least mine are) lol
