HELP !!!! INTERNAL BROKEN EGG with some soft shell hanging out her vent

I would not flush after today. Pencillin G dosage is 1/4 ml given as a shot 1/2 inch into the breast muscle for 4 days is good. Make sure she is drinking water. If you have any electrolytes you can use it for today. Here is a recipe:

HOMEMADE ELECTROLYTE SOLUTION
1/2 teaspoon salt substitute*
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon table salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1 gallon water
*Salt substitute is readily available in most stores in the spice aisle near the salt, but if you do not have it, don't worry, the solution will still have most of the benefits intended to combat heat stress

Okay this isint good in the sense that the egg parts stayed in her body overnight that's exactly what happened to my polish hen and she developed peritonitis it was diagnosed buy a avian vet using ultrasound she said it had spread to her liver and intestinal tract! And she was acting off for about six days before I brought her in to the vet. You asked for advice and as a person with first hand experience with this I sugest you don't use the expired antibiotic because its not better than nothing if you caint buy a fresh bottle than wait and buy it when you can. Strange what is stopping you from buying this? Do you have to mail order this? You should be able to get this at a feed store or farmers farmacy. The information about not using the expired antibiotic is straight from my vet, because it could cause antibiotic resistance if its expired there is no way of knowing at what level and strenght the product is curently at and this is a very serious condition that even the most powerful antibiotics sometimes cannot treat. My hen had to be on 2 antibiotics at the same time baytril and clavamox plus metacam before she even started to get better.

ok I ordered new Penicillin this morning from my vet, i can't get it at our feed store here, I'll have the new meds in 2 days. :( I hope its not going to turn into peritonitis, i hope I can catch it in time before anything sets in !!!!! I could do tylan 50 for a 3 day treatment and then do the penicillin after for 5-7 days, what do you think ? I'm just worried that something could set in in the next couple of days. yikes !!!

Well you could try yes it won't hurt, usually a peritonitis is caused buy ecoli(most common)or samonella I whould use tylan if it covers ecoli infections read and see what it says on the bottle first. But two days isint that long to waite.how is she acting right now?

Also keep watching to see if she continues laying soft shell eggs and if so you should consider getting her a hormone implant called desorelin it stop egg production and ovulation and will save your hens life like it did mine she has one right now ,because she whould not stop laying rubbery eggs even after 20 days of being on a liquid calcium supplement nothing helped.this is a very simple procidure kinda like getting you're dog microchiped and depending which one you get it lasts 6to12months and I paid 170 dollars for mine. This is just an option if she dosent stop laying soft eggs

thank you SOOO much for all your help, she is still quite but her tail is up and she is eating and drinking. I'll wait for the penicillin then I'll do a 5 day course to be safe. fingers crossed , she hasn't passed anymore egg like substance but her poop is very watery with bits of poop mixed in ?? hopefully that starts to improve .... time will tell i guess

I'm soo happy she doing better! Excellent work! Don't worry about her poop that's normal given her condition its just showing that she was recently drinking more than she was eating solids so that's why her volume of poop is on the small side and the watery part is due to you giving her lots of fluids more than she might naturally drink and that's just fine, great to hear this really happy for you keep up the good work! I take it you started giving her the tylan while your waiting for the other stuff is this why she perked up?

no i haven't given her anything , i thought i would wait for the penicillin, the tylan didn't say anything about bacterial infections etc .... so i thought when i get the penicillin tomorrow that would be better. Ill keep you posted !!! fingers crossed she continues to improve !

Yes if she is stable just waite for the antibiotic to come, pay attention to all other eggs she may lay as she could lay more of thease eggs and have another rupture inside. If she continues to lay soft eggs her life is in danger and the best thing to do if this hen is your pet is give her egg laying parts a temporary rest period as sometimes there body just malfunctions from constant stress of egg laying as they can depleate there bodys of everything trying to keep up with the never ending eggs. Get the desorelin implant put in ask a vet its safe and guareanteed to work I have done this for my girl and it is the reason she is still hear! Its reversable so depending on the size can last six months or a year you have an option if all else fails. I paid 170 dollars which was money well spent. Take care let me know how things are going!

I'd give her some calcium too. When we gave my hen antibiotics, we were meant to give it crushed up with her food. Yeah, well she wouldn't eat. So we had to crush it up and syringe feed it to her, twice daily for 2 weeks. An experience really none of us enjoyed!

Anyway, calcium is meant to help them lay (muscles) and also lay hard shelled eggs. So along with the antibiotics I gave her 1/2 crushed calcium & magnesium pill ($5 from the supermarket). Also, our feed store has probiotics you can add to their water, so I added that too. And for the first day, I mixed the crushed pills with olive oil, not water. In the hope it would oil her up internally a bit, so things could slide out nicely.

For egg bound hens, many people recommend a hot (warm) bath, or to hold their vent over a bowl of hot water for the steam. I'm not sure a hot bath is the best idea in your case, because it might add to the infection, if you have one started. But you might try the steam. I found it harder than the videos showed!
