I went to feed all my hens when the one hen suddenly flew up, and saw something strange on her side, and upon closer inspection it was a large wound in her side.

I was planning on
1. soaking her In epsom salts
2. Dry off the surrounding area
3.apply veteracin
4. Apply gauze and wrap her in vet wrap
5. Keep her isolated

Dose that sound right or are there any other suggestions

That wound is healing and not infected or seeping. If you did nothing, it will go away. If you do something, it will still heal. The healing process can take months for her to act and be normal, but nothing to worry about.
She is acting perfectly fine I am just worried about how big that wound is. Also the swelling around the area is pretty bad. Will soaking and wrapping help?

It is a large wound, but it is scabbed and dry. I cant argue for or against soaking. It certainly would not hurt it more to soak it. Wrapping it is something that I do not think is advisable. Any unnatural wrapping may cause a number of issues and she may be annoyed by it.

For this situation, I would put some antiseptic on it to help it out, but otherwise leave it alone. Removing this chicken from the flock is a good call too, that might become a pecking target otherwise.

Ok thank you for for the advice. I woulnt wrap it then, I’ll separate her though with her best friend until it heals a little more.

Can you get some chlorhexidene 2% at your drugstore? They sell it on Amazon and at some Tractor Supply Storea as well. Hibiclens in the first aid aise is 4%, and you can weaken it with water for 2%. That is a good disinfectant for the wound. You could clean the wound twice a day with that for a few days, and follow with plain antibiotic ointment plain Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment.) That can help with infection and disinfecting the wound. Then you could use plain normal saline on the wound, which is more mild, and continue the antibiotic ointment.

Homemade saline recipe:
2 tsp of table salt in 1 quart/liter of water in sauce pan. Bring to boil, reduce to low simmer, cover for 15 minutes. Remove to a clean jar or sprayer when cool.

Make sure that she is separated with food and water so the others won’t peck and injure the wound. A wire dog crate can be placed near the others in the coop or run. Make sure the wound is kept free of flies so that maggots don’t infest the wound.
