Help! Lash egg???

I hope she gets well soon! Lash egg is painful for them and she’ll need antibiotics asap
Thank you, I do too. She is my favorite girl. I hear oregano has some antibiotic properties in it so I’ll try giving her some tea I made with it as well as scrabble egg with garlic tomorrow. I have to do something for her until she can be seen.

If she is an ISA brown, I'v ehaerd this is rather common. Breeders tried to manipulate the breed so that they played A LOT of eggs. They lay eggs so well, and so non stop, that most of the time, they get reproductive issues, with will cause them to slowly decline, and cause death. Several, soft shell eggs, and now a lash egg, does sound like one of the ISA brown hens respiratory issues. I am sorry, and I hope that a vet can help you! I've heard that vet's can administer something that can shut down the laying system entirely, and that saves some hens, but it depends how far down the road they are. Sorry you have to deal with this! Good luck!

Shutting down her reproductive system would be ok by me I just want her to live! She’s been here so long it would be hard to have a hen house without her in it.

I really hope the vet can help! This is what make some so frustrated that breeders just HAD to interfere with the breed to make it lay a bunch eggs! Why don't they just leave the breed alone! I hope she gets better!

I read that suprelorin is an implant that stops hens from laying. I've been looking into it for my quail when they get older since I only want them as pets. The implant stops the hen from laying within a couple of days but sometimes the hormone wears off. Since you have an older lady I believe that's less likely.

Good Luck to you and your hen, I hope she recovers.

It's a frustrating problem that seems to be the endgame for most of the hens that live out their full lifespan (as opposed to those who process their laying hens at 2 years for meat). It always comes down to lash eggs/egg yolk peritonitis - or organ failure. The worst lash egg situation I've had is one that blocked everything including the bowels. If you find her in a nest box, or anywhere she's not normally found at night, she's likely not feeling well. These can be managed up to a point, but it's important to take into account how she's feeling overall. I don't know if aspirin relieves that kind of discomfort for chickens, but you might consider trying it.

Overall I think she is feeling better, she did have a night of laying in her box. I found a broken soft shell egg in the box the next morning but she has been acting like her normal self after that. I was able to get her seen today at a new vet hopefully they can offer me and my girl some relief

Update: we just got home from the vet she was put on Clavamox and meloxicam. The vet was impressed by her overall appearance and looking at the pictures and video that I sent of the lash egg she thought antibiotic and anti-inflammatory May help her otherwise I could have a surgical removal of her other duct which at her age is not an option so we will give this a try and hope for the best
