Hello,

I am needing advice/suggestions on figuring out what is wrong with two of my hens and my male turkey. They all seem to be lethargic....standing or even lying down in the daytime in the middle of the yard. (They are free range and roam all day) The two chickens are even closing their eyes and not wanting to eat or drink. The turkey is eating but just doesn't move around a lot.

I am not sure if they all three have some illness or we have different things going on here. Our male turkey lost his mate a couple of weeks ago and has been bummed out and "lovesick" but now I am afraid he is really sick. He has actually stopped flying up to his roost which is outside our chicken coop and I now have to keep him in the coop. The chickens can still fly I think. The two chickens just started acting like this yesterday. I have tried to feed special food like yogurt and eggs, which usually helps when they are sick, but the chickens just stand there with their eyes closed and if they do open their eyes, they don't move around much.

Just trying to figure out what is causing this and if I need to be concerned about it spreading to our other chickens.

Thanks so much!

There are several things that can affect turkeys and chickens such as coccidiosis and blackhead or histomoniasis. Turkeys can get blackhead from being raised near chickens, and although chickens can get it, it is not real common. A stool sample checked by your vet may tell if they have either disease.
