Help! Lethargic hen gasping!

Quote:
Im just annoyed I wasnt there when it happened, and that I wasnt able to identify the problem and fix it before DEATH!
Believe it or not, these hens are the first pets ive ever had in my life. Feels like ive let them down. I was looking forward to seeing the little timid hen grow into a big adult.

OP again - she WAS doing fine the past several days, but this morning when I let the girls out she stayed in the coop. Her eyes looked like they had a white film starting to cover them, she is pale and her tail drooping. I brought her inside in the warmth and she's simply haunched, not moving with her eyes closed and taking wheezing breaths. Her crop felt okay, but she does have an odor about her. The other 3 young girls seem fine...this is my first time with chickens and all my birds are 4 months or younger (sick bird Jane is only 2 mos.). What do I do now? Any suggestions? Thanks for any help!

sorry that didn't pertain to this.

I had a hen with a respiratory infection right before Christmas. The chickens were on the porch because it was going to freeze and I awoke to this really strange sound before the alarm went off. When I went out to check on the chickens nothing looked unusual. As I went about my normal routine I heard the sound again and went out to see my oldest hen straining for breath. I immediately removed her from the flock and put vitamin electrolyte water in with her. Then when I got home we gave her .5 cc Penicillin orally for 4 days. I missed one day because I ran out of syringes, so I gave her an extra dose. I gave her a week in the bathtub with a mirror for a buddy, and she healed right up. She was not contagious as I watched the rest of the flock for signs. She has been successfully re integrated into the flock and is perfectly healthy.
