Hello! We got three hens a week and a half ago- a wyandotte, an australorp and a cochin- and the cochin (Butternut) has been looking really lethargic, not eating much and mostly standing still with her eyes either partly or fully closed. The other two are happily wandering around the yard today. I know that they are known as a "lazy" breed, but I've never seen a chicken shut off like that. I wormed them a few days ago, as I'm not sure if they had been wormed prior. Here is some more information.
1) What type of bird, age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
She is a cochin hen, not totally sure of her age, but her comb has been reddening over the past week and a bit, so I think she may be coming into lay (maybe). I felt her undercarriage and she feels very thin.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Lethargy. Not eating very much, mainly treats (I brought her inside last night and gave her a boiled egg and some mealworms to eat). Closing eyes and huddling up near the other hens. She is at the bottom of the pecking order, it seems.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
Mostly over the last week. It wasn't as noticeable before because they were penned up in a 2.5x3.5m pen for a week to get used to their new home.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
No.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
No. She had some feathers missing from the back of her neck and over her hips before we got her, but the feathers are well on the way to growing back.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
I'm not sure what could have caused it.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
She has been picking at the feed mix they all get, as well as some yogurt, boiled egg and mealworms. She has been drinking.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Her poop looks normal and there has been both regular and caecal poop this morning. Her crop seems to be emptying overnight (I check all of them each morning and night), but there isn't usually much in there. Her vent looks clean too.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
Removing her from the others, she's in a box with food and water inside the garage.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
Vets are not open at the moment. Am happy to source and give medicine if needed. Just not sure what is making her feel so unwell.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
I'll try. My phone camera is terrible, sorry. I can try for a better/more pictures if it would be helpful.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
The floor of the coop is coarse sand and I remove all visible droppings each morning.
Thank you for helping in any way you can.
