Help, lethargic pullet

Chickens do not show symptoms of an illness until they are extemely ill. As prey animals, they can't afford to be sick or, they become someone's supper.

Coccidiosis can kill in hours since it is 'hidden' sometimes until it is too late. Try and get the Corid and then hand dose her. Using an eyedropper, dose her with as much as you would think she will drink in one sitting. Do this every two hours until she is up drinking on her own.
This is so true. I had a three year old hen die of coccidosis last spring the same day she showed any symptoms at all. She was up and around in the morning, hiding in her nest box by noon and dead before 5:00 p.m. She hid her illness until she was so sick she couldn't do it anymore. I had the vet see her and started treatment but it was too late to save her. He took samples and confimred the diagnosis.

Death by coccidiosis is very unpleasant for the bird, these days I keep Corid on hand and if I even suspect coccidiosis, I treat right away.

My birds have had cocci. No new birds. And not all of them had symptoms. The way I understand it works- all birds have cocci (a parasite). For whatever reason sometimes a birds system may not manage higher numbers of them well. So you treat with Corid which does not kill the cocci but rather suppresses the growth of the cocci so that the birds immune system can build more of a resistance/tolerance to them. I only had 3 birds of my 26 show symptoms. I treated the whole flock for 10 days. By the second day the sick ones improved SO much. By the 3 rd day you could not tell they had been ill at all.

Excuse my typos. Sent from my iPhone.

She passed a few minutes ago while I was getting ready to leave:( Should I still get the corid and treat her pen mates? Or my entire flock for that matter? Any egg withdrawl time? I'd like to get a necropsy done on her, any suggestions for how to find somewhere to do that?

I'm so sorry for your loss

Put her in a plastic bag and put her in the fridge. You need to keep the body refrigerated, do not freeze.

Call you local government extension office and ask them for a number to a state lab. They will be able to direct you. Having a necropsy performed is the best way to go..you will get all the answers you need.

As for the Corid, you can treat everyone..especially those that were in with her. It won't hurt them and there is no egg withdrawal time. They are safe to eat even during treatment.

Please let us know what you find out from the necropsy.

I have a 4 month old Brahma pullet that started acting lethargic last night. She just stands there and sleeps, breathing is a little labored, no interest in food or water but her crop isn't totally empty. Don't think she's egg bound as she hasn't laid yet and is a little young for that still. She feels lighter than I think she should but I have no other girls the same age to compare her to, her comb is still red. Nobody else is sick, no signs of trauma. I don't free range them, and she hasn't pooped in the hour she's been in my laundry room. Any help would be appreciated, I don't want to lose her!
ive had a chicken the very same this week too and i went to the pet store and got some Nettex Poultry Nutri Drops fast acting and after 3 days of once a day boost my chicken has pulled through and running around like before .
nutri-drops work like magic, transforming sluggish hens within just 30 minutes. It is a unique supplement that carries nutrients directly into the bloodstream immediately, providing a really fast-acting effect.
Poultry nutri-drops help boost the immune system and vitamin levels in poorly birds. It helps maintain egg production when energy is required and can reduce stress during times such as vaccination. This magic medicine also increases a chicken's appetite if it has gone off its food.
This can be used during heat stress, diorrhoea, antibiotic treatment and during periods of stress, so it is always handy to have a bottle just in case, hope this helps

Thank you everyone for your kind words and advice. I am still awaiting word back from the dept. of AG to find someone to do a necropsy on her but I will post the results once I get them.

Ok, so I got the Necropsy results back. I have no idea what this means!

I would read up on gout. Sorry, I did it for you...I had to know.

It seems as if she may have gotten into something poisonous with the possible kidney toxicity. Gout is a build up of urates in the tissues...really sounds like they think your chicken was in renal failure due to some kind of toxicity.

Good news is that it isn't contagious. Bad news is you need to find out what caused the toxicity.

Good luck...
