Help me be strong .....

I say go for it. What's 12 birds? You can completely rationalize your addiction at this point.

We bought our property 2 years ago and my husband decided he wanted a few chickens. I wanted nothing to do with it as I was raised on a farm and bottle feeding calves and mucking horse stalls at 3 am before school kinda put me off the whole farm thing.

Long story short, I started feeding his 5 isa brown x-batts and suddenly we had 60. That what we call an addiction people! We now have things under control and are around 30, incubator is running though aaaand we're building a barn for breeding pens, meat birds....goats, maybe a horse...lol.

Yeah totally under control...

Well good luck!

My issue is space also. My coop can hardly fit my 5 girls. I need to build another coop, but that can get expensive. I'm working on a coop plan that will fit my budget and maybe implement it in May, when I plan on getting more chicks. Hope all goes well because I really want more chicks!!! I should stop coming to this site

I'm struggling ... Haha. Local feed store got australorps, barred rocks and golden commits in today. I have to buy at least 6 Oy.... I don't need 6 more chicks. Although I'm almost positive I have at least one roo. I did find australorps on Craigslist but I'm hesitant to introduce non hatchery chicks into my existing flock. I'm being strong... For now!!

I am running out of feed, so I'm sending DH to buy some more. If I go to that feed store, I'll end up bringing home some chicks

I would be of no help to anyone looking for strength. Researched and decided to start small, just 3 hens for my personal egg consumption and a few to share. But, wait, I want well socialized, friendly hens and how can I get chickens and deny myself the fun of baby chicks??? The feed store had a minimum purchase # of 4. For some reason, I wanted an odd number so, 5 chicks came home with me when they were a few days old; 2 RIRs and 3 Barred Rocks.

They are thriving and so funny and sweet. All five are very affectionate and curious about whatever I'm up to but, wait...oh, my, is one of the Barred Rocks a cockerel? Comb at four weeks is much bigger than the others and starting to become pink already...yikes, wattles developing already, too! Hmmm, maybe I should get another "replacement chick" for the space that will open up when I re-home the roo? But, it would be so lonely all by itself among the big girls...come to think of it, I'm not entirely sure that one of the RIRs isn't a cockerel...

2 more babies come home and into the "brooder" (ugh, I realize that I have sentenced myself to an additional month when I will be unable to soak in my deep spa tub). Keeping up with the chicken math? I now have 7 chickens living in my master bathroom, with occasional trips outside to a playpen for the five week olds (working furiously to complete their coop and run), and I'm not really sure if any are roos and will have to go.

And so it begins...if I keep going like this, I'll have to move to a bigger place farther out in the country (oooooh, aren't Golden Laced Wyandottes pretty...)

we have 6 Layers, and six chicks, so hopefully we will have 12 total, I want a flock of 16-20, so may be hatching another batch... The only reason i want that many is bc I have a stead customer base for fresh eggs at my work. Currently the math is working for me, but if I go and buy an automatic door opener there goes that case.

I free-range mine and spend very little on feed from now till october, so my math is working out right now, but each situation is different.

Good Luck!

I'm not having any trouble containing myself because no one around me has the chicks I want! Boo Hiss!

I have room for 2 more and I'm holding out for a SLW and an EE
