Help me break my broody silkies!!!

Finally broke the last broody yesterday! Thank you everyone for your advice. Good luck, SnootyHen!
Well done!

Let us know how long the broodiness stopped before starting again. A friend of mine is Silkie obsessed and has given up on breaking them, as hers started all over after a few days/eggs. So she just lets them do their thing, but limits the eggs they are allowed to hatch to 3.

My current broody has been back and forth all spring. She literally started about a week after she started laying. It's like she learned how to lay an egg and suddenly decided she was meant to be a mommy all in one week. Ugh!!! I broke her with ice packs but it didn't last. Now she's in broody jail and staying there until she knocks this nonsense off. I feel so mean but she's just not giving it up. If she wasn't irritating all the other girls, I'd just let her sit there for 3 weeks until she figures out there's no babies and gets back to normal but she is chasing everyone else away from the boxes.

That's how they are: living and very determined incubators, which often causes problems, as they are extremely hard to break and if not taken care of, might even starve to death on their "mission".

They will not stop after 3 weeks.:barnie I made a mistake to let my Silkie mix stay broody. After 6 weeks, she was still setting on wood eggs! She lost weight and feathers. I could tell she wasn't in good health, so I had to break her. Anyway, she went straight to broody jail when she's broody again. It usaully take more than 4 days in jail to break her.

Well she's in jail next to the water (she can reach it through the bars) and I put a few handfuls of feed in there for her to "forage" for. She's angry but not gonna starve or dehydrate on my watch. I did get her to go out and free-range a little yesterday. I was so hoping that was a good sign but as soon as she got back in, she was all "buk buk buk" ticking timebomb headed straight for the boxes.

The 1st silkie I broke decided to go broody again yesterday, but I locked it out of the coop today until it got distracted. Pretty sure it’s broken...for now. That one literally goes broody every week. The rest are every few months. I’ve definitely noticed that individual broodies each have a breaking method that works best.

Hopefully your ticking timebomb will come around soon!

She's still in jail today. I keep giving her a chance and she keeps going right back to the boxes so back in she goes. Once the others have all layed, I close the coop door and lock them all out so she can be "free" but not get to the nesting boxes. But the minute she can get back in, she goes for it. Silly bird!
