What is wrong with a RIR roo X Black Australorps?
Black Australorps roo x Peral White leghorn?

Or what other crosses do you recomend for the best bang for the buck?

Isn't that why there are sex links? Well, besides the male/female at hatch...definately need the RIR in there, haven't found any breed out of mine listed below, to match the laying size and capability of the RIR's unless its a goose;)

copper black marans over barred rock? I have two BR girls in with two that have not yet begun to lay in with two CBM roos from proven dark lines. If you want some eggs to try out just for fun, let me know. I will send you some just for shipping.

That's an Austra White.

Both Privet and Dunlap hatcheries sell that hybrid. Just as you suggest - BA roo x Leghorn hen. Dunlap shows them as completely white. Privet has them white with a few black spots.

Australorps used to be an important laying breed. In fact, in some places in the world (where tinted eggs are more acceptable), they are still an important production breed. Genetically, they are part of one of the common white egg layers in Europe - Shaver Starcross. The tinting was apparently bred out. At least, I think they are part of the genetic makeup of the Starcross.
