If you were hoping to get high quality Black Copper Marans, true Ameracaunas and some Olive Eggers, where would you go? Id love it if they shipped. I’m in Colorado. Looking for breeder quality, not Hatcher quality. Npip certified. Would love to hear if anyone knows of someone with all 3?

You might want to reach out to some local people who show birds. In my case, I would call up our local 4H poultry coordinator and ask him about breeders in the area. There are a few breeders in my area, but they are very serious about their flocks. I went to the 4H poultry show at our county fair this year and the 4H poultry coordinator was also a poultry judge. So he really knew his standards and was more than willing to talk about breeding chickens. He judges all over the state, so he would have lots of contacts. Maybe you have someone like that where you live.

At one of my local farm stores, the "poultry" guy has 20+ years of raising and breeding chickens. You don't know these things unless you ask and talk to these people. None of the breeders I know around where I live advertise other than word of mouth. So that's the challenge to get "in the know."

I am very happy with my hatchery birds, but if you need a higher quality or more true to standards birds, it might be worth your time also calling up the hatcheries and asking them directly if they have any breeder quality birds for sale, or if they could suggest a place where you could obtain chicks/eggs.

Best wishes to you on this venture. Please update the thread as you get closer to the information you need.

you can search the NPIP website by state. It will open a document with addresses, etc of breeders/hatcheries along with stock codes. The stock codes are in another link on the left side of webpage. You want “R” for regular size birds. Look up codes you want then use the “find” function on your computer to search the state doc for those codes. At least you’ll find out if any are within driving distance to you.

good luck

So I have been looking over the NPIP site but cannot find the state directories, do you need to be a member to access it?

Can’t help you with the Ameracaunas or OE’s, but if you want to find a Marans breeder, contact Marans Chicken Club of America (MCCUSA). They were very helpful in putting me in touch with a great local breeder in my area. MCCUSA encourages responsible breeding of Marans to APA SOP, which is French (feather legged) type.

No. At the very top of the page is a participants by “state” heading. Click on it, will take you to a map of US. Then you can click on whatever state you are interested in.
