You might want to reach out to some local people who show birds. In my case, I would call up our local 4H poultry coordinator and ask him about breeders in the area. There are a few breeders in my area, but they are very serious about their flocks. I went to the 4H poultry show at our county fair this year and the 4H poultry coordinator was also a poultry judge. So he really knew his standards and was more than willing to talk about breeding chickens. He judges all over the state, so he would have lots of contacts. Maybe you have someone like that where you live.
At one of my local farm stores, the "poultry" guy has 20+ years of raising and breeding chickens. You don't know these things unless you ask and talk to these people. None of the breeders I know around where I live advertise other than word of mouth. So that's the challenge to get "in the know."
I am very happy with my hatchery birds, but if you need a higher quality or more true to standards birds, it might be worth your time also calling up the hatcheries and asking them directly if they have any breeder quality birds for sale, or if they could suggest a place where you could obtain chicks/eggs.
Best wishes to you on this venture. Please update the thread as you get closer to the information you need.
