I want to get a small pigeon/dove that I can keep in my garage with things like a heat lamp or a fan if necessary. I would prefer to just get one but I can get a pair if the perfect breed for me requires it. I would like for it to be pretty easy to care for a it has to be friendly! I only enjoy pets that I can hold and form a bond with. Anyone know what breed is my perfect match?

Hand raised pigeons are generally the tamest by far, but not easy to obtain if not buying a breeding pair. Mookies and Pygmy pouters are generally the top two choices I hear for human-friendly breeds. Ringneck doves are another front runner. Classic oriental frills are pretty, poor fliers (though I hear this isn't always the case), and not high strung. Mine is fairly tame, but he was hand fed and raised from a fairly young age...though not young enough to be as tame as he could have been.

I think mookies are a good fit. what will the setup be? we need more background information.......... are you going to hand raise them? if so, like i said mookies are good. German Beauties too. Both are good fits for homekeeping.

Well i'm not planning on getting babies if that's what you mean by hand-raising. I would buy adults or young ones that are friendly and I would love to handle them and play with them daily. I'll buy/make whatever cage size they need and most likely i'll keep them in my garage on the side we dont use for anything but a place to put things. It never gets below freezing in my garage but gets a little hot in the summer. I can provide and heat lamp or a fan like I said before. I don't want to keep them in my house because of the whole non-stick pan thing. My family will not get rid of our non-stick stuff no matter what I say. My screened-in porch was my other choice but rain and wind blow in with bad storms and that is not a very nice place to put them so my garage seems to be the number one option.

not to get off subject, but non-stick is not healthy for us either. it can give off fumes that not only hurt birds, but us too. i only use steel or cast iron. But anyways, i was thinking- german beauties are the way to go for this. they are small, so they would do great. a little hard to find, but not TOO bad.............

I heard about that but like I said no one will agree to give them up! They're all saying "I just won't turn up the heat really high". I don't know what the point in denying it's not good for anyone is.

PICAS, PICAS, PICAS!!!
Picas are great birds! They were my first breed and still have them.I LOVE picas! They bond with you and love attention. They are so full of them selves.
Every time i feed them, they coo and strut when they see me.What part of n.c are you in? I"m in W-S.
Will you be at the show this saterday at the Dixie Clasic Fairgrounds?

Thanks,
Logan
