Is their someone you can entirely trust to care for your cat while your gone? I wouldn’t bring my cat to my trips. I would be afraid of him getting stressed constantly and him possibly escaping from the hotel or anywhere for a stop to feed, drink.

I'll be stopping in Redding for a night

I would suggest splitting the trip into thirds. Assuming Redding is about halfway, you're looking at two days of over 7 hours at 70 mph. That's not as easy as it sounds.

even harder for someone who got their license a few months ago.
