Earlier I was sitting on the porch an noticed that my hen had something hanging out of her butt it was long an kinda see thru kinda like plastic but looked more rubber like too. The area wasn’t red or prolapsed tho! I wasn’t able to get pictures an I didn’t want to mess with it cause I was afraid it could be her intestines? Could someone please help me. I really don’t wanna loose my hen!!

Pictures will be needed for anyone to be able to help you. Also, what is the breed and age of your bird? Is she laying and if so, when did she last lay an egg? Can you separate her from your other chickens, preferably in a dog crate, so they cannot peck at the injury and make it worse? And can you bring her inside to protect her from flies? Is she earing, drinking, pooping?

She’s 10 months old an she’s a Rhode Island Red, shes still eating an drinking an acting like she is okay an the last time that I know of that she laid an egg was yesterday morning. An I’m sorry for the no pictures she wouldn’t hold still to let me take pictures.

I'm sorry your hen is having this problem. I'm just guessing, but it sounds like a prolapsed vent. The best advice I can give you is to isolate and protect her as I described above and keep the prolapsed tissues from drying out by coating them with something like Vaseline, or Neosporin without pain medication, or other antibiotic ointment. Do a search here on BYC for "prolapsed vent" for more specific and detailed care, and we can ask some of our more experienced folks here for help. It being so late, they may not respond till morning.

I had this happen to one of my hens, but it was so extensive that I was unable to save her. These ladies have much more experience with this and I'm sure one or more of them will be able to help you. Good luck!

Could it be part of a broken egg, i.e. the membrane of the egg?
I would catch her, contain her- see if there are signs of yolk or other egg type debris around her vent.

Look up "digestive tract of a chicken" - there are pictures out there that show the real parts laid out intact from a chicken, that will help you decide if what you're looking at is intestines.

If the vent itself isn't prolapsed, I would be inclined to say that there's little chance it's her intestine.

Personally, I would utilize some lubrication and see if you can follow the protruding object inside the chicken to ensure you extract the whole thing. If it is part of a collapsed egg, it's important to get everything out. Sometimes a weak or shell-less egg breaks inside and the membrane collapses internally and then get wadded up by the hen as her muscles contract to lay the egg. When they lay one of those we often hear it described as "rubbery".

Agreed, sounds like a membrane.
Hopefully we can get some photos or @R-achealm will give us an update:)

I also agree that it sounds like an egg membrane.. possibly a hiccup caused by the shorter days.. or something else.

Sounds like you are very confident it is NOT prolapse, which I personally don't treat for but euthanize because it *might* be genetic and I breed my birds.. Intestines won't just come out.. If they were she would be acting very odd I suspect as it would likely be very uncomfortable and life threatening without treatment... Is she passing any droppings? How long since you noticed this?

I would also utilize either some lubrication or a warm epsom salt soak followed by inspection and assistance if possible or still needed.

Hope this resolves quickly! :fl
