HELP!!!! Missing Eggs!!!

Sorry you are having this trouble chickymama.

Sounds like you need to get her and the others in a secured pen to be able to hatch out . The snake may only be able to eat 4 or 5 so it won't take what it can't eat. Unlike some youngun's at our dinner table.

We had noticed a reduction in our girls laying ( at least DH did while I was out of town for 3 days). DH was only getting 1 or 2 eggs out of the nesting boxes a day. So when I returned home I checked the Duck shed and I found 7 eggs on a straw bale in a little nesting area. Found the missing eggs. The chickens and ducks share the run area. Ducks usually free range during the day.

Sure wish your missing eggs case could be solved that easy.

My chickies are "free range" except for 1 mama and her 2 babies. They are in a little pen at the back of the house. The fencing is only about 2' high so the other chickies can come visit and mama can come and go as she likes and keep the babies safe.

I would love for little Wilma to have a successful hatch. She lost 2 babies in early spring due to a cat, then about a month ago she was about a week away from hatching out and the mysterious creature came and took all eggs except one. Poor little Wilma.

I will stop by and pick up some snake-away today on my way home.

Do you have crows or ravens around your area?

I had a pair come in every morning for 2-3 weeks and steal my duck eggs. They would eat them or fly off with a whole duck egg! It took us a week to figure it out and we started getting up earlier and going out 2-3 times a morning to collect the eggs so the blasted things wouldn't steal them.

They eventually gave up and I haven't seen them "buzz" the house for about 10 days now.

I lost my Roo last night.... This means WAR! Looks like it's time to set the trap again. The varmits don't know they shouldn't mess with a woman and her chickies!!!!

If it were me I would still get them in a secure pen.
I know you want them to be free range. They still can be if you get a tractor for them to move around in the area. That way they will still be able to eat vegatation and be protected.

I hope things get better, and you catch the

varmit.

What you could do is give her a nest box in an enclosed coop where she could sit. If i left my tiny bantam brooding loose in the yard i would not expect her or her eggs to survive one night.

I would not dream of leaving a chicken loose with cats, racoons and God knows what else roaming loose under the house ? In the same way i would not turn my parrots out in the yard with no protection.
I certainly would not think it was safe there.

So sorry for your loss. I think she needs a safe place to brood not loose in the yard or under the house.

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear about your Roo! I hate when that happens, I had a beautiful Birchen Cochin Rooster, Mr. Roo, eaten by a racoon. We went to war with them, trapping every night for a long time. We have not had a problem since.

btw, if you're looking for a snake, don't forget to look UP. The one in our coop was up in the rafters.
