We have one rooster in a coop (all by himself for the time being) and we have just discovered that we thought was his fleshy head (he's a funny looking silkie) is a major infestation of mites or the like. They are only on the fleshy parts (not on feathers or underneath wings, etc.) and they just seem to "suck". Our vet told us to use Adams Flea and Tick control. This only killed a handful of them on contact. Any better ideas how to treat this. Or can someone here identify what parasite this is so we can best treat this and keep the rest of our flock healthy and parasite free?

Thank you!

Go to your local petstore and get a bottle of mite and lice spray for birds. It's commomly used for parrots. Follow the directions to a T spraying under the wings ect. It works great and only cost $8 to $10 for a bottle. Repeat in 2 days and use once a month as a prevenative.

Sevin dust or Adams Flea and Tick spray works well. You'll want to act quickly as it's miserable for the poor roo and can cause anemia and death! Good luck!

Edited to say you can buy either of these at walmart!

I just used Adams on Saturday. Can I retreat with Adams again? Or is it safe to go ahead and treat with something else?

Thanks!
