One of our black and white (breed still unknown) chicks....I think it's a pullet.....had a very swollen crop earlier this week. Since my chicks can free range for part of the day, I thought perhaps it was time to introduce some grit. So I did. I massaged "her" crop, gave the grit, the next day it was down considerably. This whole time she's been eating and drinking fine...playing with the other chicks..no signs of sickness other than her swollen crop.

Today I went out and again, swollen and it moves around like a pregnant woman's belly at 9 months....and it makes a sloshing noise. I held her and massaged her crop a bit and put her back in the run and it seemed to go down a bit in size.

What can I do? I'm still so new a chicken ownership. Is this something she needs to be put down for?

Thanks....

PS....I did read up on this condition on this forum and online...but I'm still unsure.....any advice is so greatly appreciated.

Sounds like sour crop, but I don't know for sure. One of my hens developed the condition and eventually died from it. Her crop was massive, but she was losing weight. So I'd turn her upside down and gently massage her crop every couple of days... all kinds of foul-smelling slime would come out, which temporarily made her feel better. But I never could get the condition under control, even after feeding her yogurt.

Maybe someone else on here has some suggestions.
